Crusader XM2001 Self-Propelled Howitzer: Background and Issues for Congress

Description: The Army has been seeking to enhance its self-propelled 155mm artillery capabilities since the late 1970's. The Arsenal Act: Context and Legislative History

Description: This report describes the roles of the federal manufacturing arsenals during the years surrounding the enactment of the two sections of the Arsenal Act, one as part of the Army Appropriations Act for 1854, and the other within the Defense Act of 1920, also known as the Army Reorganization Act of 1920, and provides historical context. The report also shows the change in language between the sections' original enactment and today, and it provides details on the Army's policy in implementing the manufacturing sourcing portion of the statute.

Ditching Tests With 1/16-Size Models of the Army B-17 Airplane in Langley Tank Number 2 and on an Outdoor Catapult

Description: Report presenting tests with dynamically similar models made to study the behavior of the Army B-17F and B-17G when ditched and to determine the best way to land them in calm and rough water. Various landing attitudes, speeds, and conditions of damage were simulated. The ideal landing condition was found to be in a three-point landing attitude and with the flaps 45 degrees at the slowest possible speed.

Ditching tests with a 1/16-size dynamic model of the Army B-24 airplane in Langley tank number 2 and on an outdoor catapult

Description: Testing conducted to determine the best way to ditch the Army B-24 airplane in calm and rough water and to determine its probable ditching performance. A dynamically similar model was ditched in calm water in tank no. 2 and calm and rough water from an outdoor catapult. Results regarding the effect of attitude and speed, effect of flap setting, effect of vertical velocity, effect of location of center of gravity, effect of simulated damage, effect of ditching aids, effect of fuselage length, effect of landing gear, effect of load, and effect of seaway are provided.
