Silicon-on ceramic process: silicon sheet growth and device development for the large-area silicon sheet task of the Low-Cost Solar Array Project. Quarterly report No. 14, January 1-March 31, 1980

Description: The purpose of this research program is to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of producing solar-cell-quality sheet silicon by coating inexpensive ceramic substrates with a thin layer of polycrystalline silicon. The coating methods to be developed are directed toward a minimum-cost process for producing solar cells with a terrestrial conversion efficiency of 11% or greater. By applying a graphite coating to one face of a ceramic substrate, molten silicon can be made to wet only … more

Probing Radiation Damage in Plutonium Alloys with Multiple Measurement Techniques

Description: A material subjected to radiation damage will usually experience changes in its physical properties. Measuring these changes in the physical properties provides a basis to study radiation damage in a material which is important for a variety of real world applications from reactor materials to semiconducting devices. When investigating radiation damage, the relative sensitivity of any given property can vary considerably based on the concentration and type of damage present as well as external … more

Mutual passivation effects in Si-doped diluted In{sub y}Ga{sub 1-y}As{sub 1-x}N{sub x} alloys

Description: We report systematic investigations of the mutual passivation effects of Si hydrogenic donors and isovalent nitrogen in dilute InGaAs{sub 1-x}N{sub x} alloys. Upon thermal annealing at temperatures above {approx}650 C, the Si atoms diffuse assisted by the formation and migration of Ga vacancies. When they find nitrogen atoms, they form stable Si{sub Ga}-N{sub As} nearest-neighbor pairs. As a result of the pair formation, the electrical activity of Si{sub Ga} donors is passivated. At the same ti… more

Effects of Large Neutron Doses and Elevated Temperature on Type 347 Stainless

Description: Tests of subsize tensile and impact specimens of Type 547 stainless steel irradiated in three capsules to fastneutron exposures of up to 1.1 x 10/sup 22/ nvt were conducted. Ductile fractures at impact energies of 65 ft-lb, representing a 35% decrease in impact strength, were noted at room temperature. Impact energies of approximates 20 ft-lb and a fracture with both brittle and ductile characteristics were observed at -300 deg F. Irradiation-induced property changes included increases in yield… more

Densification and residual stress induced by CO2 laser-based mitigation of SiO2 surfaces

Description: Knowing the ultimate surface morphology resulting from CO{sub 2} laser mitigation of induced laser damage is important both for determining adequate treatment protocols, and for preventing deleterious intensification upon subsequent illumination of downstream optics. Physical effects such as evaporation, viscous flow and densification can strongly affect the final morphology of the treated site. Evaporation is a strong function of temperature and will play a leading role in determining pit shap… more

Corrosion Rate of Alloy 22 as a Function of Immersion Time

Description: Alloy 22 (N06022) is a nickel (Ni) based alloy containing nominally 22% Chromium (Cr), 13% Molybdenum (Mo) and 3% tungsten (W). Alloy 22 is highly resistant to general and localized corrosion such as pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Due to the formation of a stable passive film, when Alloy 22 is immersed in certain electrolytes, its corrosion potential (E{sub corr}) increases and its corrosion rate (CR) decreases as a function of the immersion time. This paper discusses the evol… more

Superheating and supercooling of Ge nanocrystals embedded inSiO2

Description: Free-standing nanocrystals exhibit a size-dependant thermodynamic melting point reduction relative to the bulk melting point that is governed by the surface free energy. The presence of an encapsulating matrix, however, alters the interface free energy of nanocrystals and their thermodynamic melting point can either increase or decrease relative to bulk. Furthermore, kinetic contributions can significantly alter the melting behaviors of embedded nanoscale materials. To study the effect of an en… more
