Vacuum system transient simulator and its application to TFTR

Description: The vacuum system transient simulator (VSTS) models transient gas transport throughout complex networks of ducts, valves, traps, vacuum pumps, and other related vacuum system components. VSTS is capable of treating gas models of up to 10 species, for all flow regimes from pure molecular to continuum. Viscous interactions between species are considered as well as non-uniform temperature of a system. A Mechanism Explaining the Instability of EBR-I, Mark III

Description: Presented at the International Atomic Energy Agencysponsored Seminar on the Physics of Fast and Intermediate Reactors. Vienna, August 3-11, 196l. A feedback model, was developed to account for resonant instabilities in the Mark II core. In this model, the prompt positive power coefficient effect is ascribed to fuel rod bowing and the delayed negative power coefficient effect to thermally lnduced motions in the lower shield plate. Since this model is supported by observations, it is concluded th… more

Four-wheel-drive powertrain models for real-time simulation

Description: Dynamic vehicle powertrain models have been formulated by many researchers for particular applications, mainly the analysis of powertrain characteristics or vibration. In this paper, we formulate models of four-wheel-drive vehicle powertrains for the purpose of real-time simulation. While not encompassing the complete characteristics of powertrain operation, these models are applicable for use in vehicle simulators, and include both the differential and lock-up modes of four-wheel-drive transfe… more

Reservoir performance in viscoelastic porous media

Description: The mass balance equations for a two-phase two-component fluid system are written for viscoelastic porous media. The resulting equations are approximated by finite differences and the resulting numerical simulator is used to conduct a sensitivity study on the effects of uniaxial viscoelastic deformation in geopressured aquifers. Results of this study indicate that viscoelastic deformation may have considerable influence on the pressure maintenance of these aquifers. A numerical model of the geo… more

High-speed BWR power plant simulations on the special-purpose peripheral processor AD10

Description: A newly developed technique is described for fast, on-line simulations of normal and accidental transients in nuclear power plants. The technique is based on the utilization of the special-purpose peripheral processor ADlO, which is specifically designed for high-speed systems simulations through integration of large systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The Peach Bottom-II Boiling Water Reactor power plant has been simulated and results are presented. It is shown that the new t… more

Programs for control of an analog-signal switching network

Description: A suite of programs has been developed to control the network of analog-signal switching multiplexers in the AGS complex. The software is driven by a relational database which describes the architecture of the multiplexer tree and the set of available analog signals. Signals are routed through a three-layer multiplexer tree, to be made available at four consoles each with three 4-trace oscilloscopes. A menu-structured operator interface program is available at each console, to accept requests t… more

Mathematical methodology for evaluating simulations of flow in porous media. Final report, February 1, 1980-August 31, 1983

Description: This report concerns development of a methodology for evaluation of reservoir simulators. Although validity and usefulness of reservoir simulations might be questioned on various grounds, this study involves tests of resolution of numerical computational difficulties and of compatibility of correlations used in representation of fluid properties and phase flow interference. A similarity concept is used which allows testing of simulators to be based on solution of a system of ordinary differenti… more

Analytical modeling of line focus solar collectors

Description: Solar thermal electric power generation systems and industrial process heat systems generating steam through flash vaporization require a constant outlet temperature from the collector field. This constant temperature is most efficiently maintained by adjusting the circulating fluid flow rate. Successful design of analog controllers for this regulation requires knowledge of system dynamics and the nonlinear nature of the system parameters. Simplified models relating deviations in outlet tempera… more
