Biological Production of Ethanol From Coal

Description: Research is continuing in an attempt to increase both the ethanol concentration and product ratio using C. ljungdahlii. The purpose of this report is to present data utilizing a medium prepared especially for C. ljungdahlii. Medium development studies are presented, as well as reactor studies with the new medium in batch reactors. CSTRs and CSTRs with cell recycle. The use of this new medium has resulted in significant improvements in cell concentration, ethanol concentration and product ratio.

Cementitious yttria products

Description: An investigation has been made of the physical properties and formation conditions of cements formed in the yttria/salt/water system. Cementitious binders were of the nominal Y/sub 2/(OH)/sub 5/X.H/sub 2/O type (where X represents the Cl/sup -/ or NO/sub 3//sup -/). An ammonium nitrate-produced yttria cement was shown to be sinterable and was demonstrated to form very refractory castable concretes with zirconia or alumina aggregates.

Biological production of organic solvents from cellulosic wastes. Progress report, September 15, 1976--September 14, 1977

Description: The following results were obtained from studies on the cadmium-cadmium carbonate cycle. A new lower limit for the heat of formation of CdO(g) has been estimated ..delta..H/sup 0//sub f,298/ > 113.8 kJ/mol. Hydrogen production is subject to catalysis. Recovery of anaerobic digestion after exposure to toxicants. Final report

Description: The concept that methane fermentation cannot tolerate chronic or slug doses of toxicants has almost totally precluded methane fermentation as a viable contender for the treatment of industrial wastewaters. Organ/inorganic interactions of nitrogen in oilfields: Part 1, Geochemistry

Description: A detailed investigation of the geochemistry of nitrogen in oilfields is being conducted in order to test the model that N is generated from hydrocarbons during thermal maturation and is incorporated into authigenic clay minerals in the sediments through which the oil and brines migrate. Distribution Ratios on Dowex 50w Resins of Metal Leached in the Caron Nickel Recovery Process

Description: Pressurized ion exchange on Dowex 50W-X8 and 50W-X12 resins was investigated using elution techniques to determine distribution ratios for copper, nickel, and cobalt complexes contained in ammonium carbonate solution, a mixture which approximates the waste liquor from the Caron nickel recovery process. Di-n-amyl-n-amylphosphonate and tricaprylmethylammonium nitrate as potential extractants for reprocessing Th-U fuels

Description: Both 2F di-n-amyl-n-amylphosphonate in n-dodecane (DA(AP)-DD) and 0.77F tricaprylmethylammonium nitrate in Aromatic 100 (TCMA.NO/sub 3/-AR100) extract uranium and thorium into relatively concentrated organic solutions. Colorimetric determination of Fe sup 2+ /Fe sup 3+ ratio in radioactive glasses

Description: In the vitrification of nuclear wastes, the Fe{sup 2+}/Fe{sup 3+} ratio in the glass is a measure of the redox properties of the glass melt. It is necessary to measure this ratio to ensure that the melt redox properties are suitable for the glass melter. Pellet fabrication development using thermally denitrated UO sub 2 powder

Description: Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) has evaluted, on a laboratory scale, the characteristics and pellet fabrication properties of UO{sub 3} powder prepared by the thermal denitration process. Excellent quality, 96% TD (percent of theoretical density) pellets were produced from development lots of this powder. Analytical summary of experimental data from two years of hourly sequential precipitation samples at Brookhaven National Laboratory

Effects of humidity during photoprocessing on thin film metallization adhesion

Description: Humidity effects during photoprocessing on tantalum/chromium/gold thin film networks (TFNs) were investigated. Humidity conditions at various process steps were controlled by placing either desiccant or water in handling containers for the TFNs. The TFNs photoprocessed in humid conditions had a much higher occurrence of metallization failures compared to TFNs processed in dry conditions.
