A standard AlSi braze wetting test for aluminum components used in the lead-dip process

Description: Wetting of the aluminum components by aluminum-silicon brazing alloy is a major factor influencing the quality of the fuel elements. Several process variables associated with the impact extrusion of aluminum components influence the resulting Al surface. In addition, these processing variables interact with the HAPO component production cleaning process to give varying results. Purpose of this document is to define the parameters for selecting, preparing) testing and evaluating the AlSi wetting… more

Development and evaluation of spire pulse for AlSi lead-dip canning

Description: In the AlSi process, the I&E fuel element is assembled in a two-piece aluminum container consisting of an outer cylindrical shell and an inner tube containing an integrally impacted cap wafer which forms the top end and cap during canning. Both autoclave failures and reactor failures have been attributed to porosity in the AlSi and non-wetting of the aluminum wafer with AlSi. Porosity and non-wetting in the area of the cap closure provides a pathway for water to penetrate through to the uranium… more

Design criteria - slug assembly and quench machine

Description: Mechanization of the 300 Area slug canning facilities is required to obtain uniform high quality product and to eliminate variables introduced by the human element. The work to be covered by this brochure will cover requirements for mechanization of only the operations occurring within the aluminum-silicon canning bath: can and cap preheating and wetting, canning assembly, and quenching operation. Briefly, this machine will be required to insert a prepared uranium slug into an aluminum can and … more
