A Flight Investigation of Exhaust-Heat De-Icing, Special Report

Description: The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics has conducted exhaust-heat de-icing tests inflight to provide data needed in the application of this method of ice prevention. The capacity to extract heat from the exhaust gas for de-icing purposes, the quantity of heat required, and other factors were examined. The results indicate that a wing-heating system employing a spanwise exhaust tube within the leading edge of the wing will make available for de-icing purposes between 30 and 35 percent of the exhaust-gas heat.

Description: Following a brief summary of recent developments regarding the implementation and re-evaluation of the 1997 standards, this report provides a broad overview of the standard-setting process, followed by a description of revisions to earlier standards, legal challenges to the 1997 standard, and particulate matter health effects research. EPA’s ongoing progress in reviewing the 1997 standard is then summarized. Theory and Experiments on Supersonic Air-to-Air Ejectors

Description: A comparison of experiment with theory is made for air ejectors having cylindrical mixing sections and operating under conditions of supersonic primary flow and either mixed or supersonic regimes of mixing. The effect on ejector performance of such parameters as mixer length and cross section, terminating diffuser, primary Mach number, and primary nozzle position is presented in terms of mass flow and pressure ratio.

Investigation of the Penetration on an Air Jet Directed Perpendicularly to an Air Stream

Description: Note presenting an experimental investigation conducted to determine the penetration of a circular air jet directly perpendicularly to an air stream as a function of jet density, jet velocity, air-stream density, air-stream velocity, jet diameter, and distance downstream from the jet. The penetration was determined for nearly constant values of air-stream density at two tunnel velocities, four jet diameters, four positions downstream of the jet, and for a large range of jet velocities and densities.
