Experimental evaluation of acoustic agglomerators as an air cleaning system concept for emergency use in LMFBR plants. Final report

Description: In the development of the Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor, a major safety problem concerns the suppression of the sodium oxides aerosol particles produced during a hypothetical core disruptive accident. Some theoretical calculations are presented concerning sonic agglomeration rates of such a system in terms of acoustic frequency, intensity and particles. The information is useful in providing some guidelines for the evaluation and design of sonic systems for LMFBR emergency applications.

Energetic Particle-induced Geodesic Acoustic Mode

Description: A new energetic particle-induced Geodesic Acoustic Mode (EGAM) is shown to exist. The mode frequency, mode structure, and mode destabilization are determined non-perturbatively by energetic particle kinetic effects. Near net shape forming processes for chemically prepared zinc oxide varistors.

Description: Chemically prepared zinc oxide powders are fabricated for the production of high aspect ratio varistor components. Colloidal processing in water was performed to reduce agglomerates to primary particles, form a high solids loading slurry, and prevent dopant migration. Ultrafast high strain rate acoustic wave measurements at high static pressure in a diamond anvil cell

Description: We have used sub-picosecond laser pulses to launch ultra-high strain rate ({approx} 10{sup 9} s{sup -1}) nonlinear acoustic waves into a 4:1 methanol-ethanol pressure medium which has been precompressed in a standard diamond anvil cell. Using ultrafast interferometry, we have characterized acoustic wave propagation into the pressure medium at static compression up to 24 GPa.
