Method of measuring the polarization of high momentum proton beams. [Primakoff effect, asymmetries]

Description: A method of measuring the polarization of high momentum proton beams is proposed. This method utilizes the Primakoff effect and relates asymmetries at high energy to large asymmetries already measured at low energy. Such a new method is essential for the success of future experiments at energies where present methods are no longer feasible.

The Approach to Scaling in Single Particle Inclusive Hadron Scattering from 4-GeV/c to 250 GeV/c

Description: Measurements of the dependence on s = (p{sub a} + p{sub b}){sup 2} of the cross section for single charged hadron production in the reactions a + b {yields} c + anything are presented. Particle c is detected in a fixed interval of laboratory momentum and angle in the fragmentation region of the target proton. For the energy range studied there are significant departures from A + Bs{sup -1/2} energy dependence. When these departures are taken into account, asymptotic predictions such as Pomeron … more

Measurement of y-Distributions for High Energy Antineutrino Scattering in Hydrogen-Neon

Description: Distributions in the scaling variable y are presented based on a study of approximately 700 antineutrino events in the energy range 10-200 GeV obtained using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber filled with a light Hydrogen-Neon mixture. The distributions are inconsistent with a (1 -y){sup 2} form predicted by the simple quark parton model of the nucleon without antiquarks, but can be well fitted assuming a relative antiquark contribution of (10 {+-} 5)%. For small values of the Bjorken scaling va… more

Search for anti-neutrino induced muon+ e- events

Description: The authors have examined 1200 interactions with visible energies greater than 7.5 GeV produced by an anti-neutrino beam in the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber filled with a light neon hydrogen mixture. They have found one event with a {mu}{sup +}e{sup -} and hadrons in the final state, but with no evidence of strange particle production. This event may be an example of dilepton production by an anti-neutrino interaction, but other interpretations are possible. With 90% confidence, they conclud… more

Analysis of 303-GeV/c Proton Interactions Tagged by High-Energy Gamma rays

Description: Two emulsion chambers of sandwich type of nuclear emulsion and thin lead plates were exposed to 303 GeV/c proton beams at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. 70 jet showers tagged by high energy {gamma} rays were analyzed and correlations between high energy {gamma} rays and charged particles with large transverse momenta were studied. Strong correlation was observed between these components and a possible explanation for this effect may be the formation of a forward excited baryon and i… more

Neutral Currents - The Structure of the Coupling

Description: The authors report here on latest results from an investigation of the form of the neutral current coupling in the inclusive channels {nu}{sub {mu}} + N {yields} {nu}{sub {mu}} + hadrons and {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} + N {yields} {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} + hadrons. The experiment was conducted by the Caltech-Fermilab group in October 1974. The data were taken in the Fermilab narrow band beam set to a mean secondary hadron energy of {+-} 170 GeV. The distributions of total energy, observed in the target … more

Inelastic Muon-Proton Scattering: Multiplicity Distributions, and Prong Cross Sections

Description: In a streamer chamber experiment at SLAC, hadron production was observed in inelastic collisions of 14 GeV positive muons in a liquid hydrogen target. Experiment, analysis, and resulting cross-sections are reported for hadronic prongs as well as charged hadron multiplicity distribution.

Nuclear chemistry research. Progress report, November 1, 1975--October 31, 1976. [Summary of research activities at the University of Chicago]

Description: Experiments in progress to study the dependence of cross section and gross recoil properties of various radioactive products from light (Al), medium-mass (Cu, Ag) and heavy (Bi, U) target nuclei bombarded with high-energy protons (1-400 GeV) are nearing completion. Emphasis is now being given to the details of the production processes, such as the angular and energy distributions of the products and their relation to fundamental particle interactions. Experiments are also underway on the compar… more

Impact parameter study of elastic hadron--proton scattering at 50 and 175 GeV/c. Interim report No. 137. [Differential cross sections, optical model, partial waves]

Description: In hadron-proton collisions at high energies, the impact profile function measures the range and strength of the strong interaction. It determines the effective size and shape of the hadrons involved, for purposes of both elastic scattering and particle production, but depends solely upon the behavior in t of the elastic differential cross-section. Such an analysis of the reactions ..pi.. +- p, K +- p, and p +- p at incident momenta from 50 to 175 GeV/c is presented using the elastic scattering… more

Spin from isospin in a gauge theory. [SU-2 theory]

Description: It is shown that in an SU(2) gauge theory, with isospin symmetry broken by a triplet of scalar mesons, isospinor degrees of freedom are converted into spin degrees of freedom, in the field of a magnetic monopole.

Experimental searches for magnetic monopoles. [Mass, probability, review]

Description: Analysis of the sensitivity of previous negative searches for magnetic monopoles shows that they constitute prior evidence against the monopole interpretation of the event reported as ''evidence for detection of a moving magnetic monopole''. The strength of the evidence varies with the unknown mass of the monopole. For M less than or equal to 10/sup 5/ GeV, odds are greater than 10/sup 6/ : 1 against. For larger masses, the limits depend strongly on assumptions about the range of monopoles and … more

Regge spectroscopy of charmed mesons

Description: The implication of assigning the newly discovered particles to Regge trajectories is discussed. The Ademollo-Veneziano-Weinberg relation is used to determine the trajectory parameters and exchange degeneracy is used to predict a tensor particle at 2264 MeV and an axial vector particle at 2140 MeV.

Evidence for a neutrino-induced dilepton event in the A. N. L. 12-foot bubble chamber. [Approximately 2000 MeV/c/sup 2/]

Description: The event ..nu..p(n/sub s/) ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/p..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/..pi../sup 0/e/sup +/ ..nu../sub e/(n /sub s/), found in a bubble chamber, is considered. It is concluded that this event is clearly unusual when explained in terms of normal neutrino interactions. But if it is an example of dilepton production, it occurs at the expected rate of single lepton production. If it is due to the weak decay of a new baryon, the baryon mass appears to be near 2 GeV/c/sup 2/ and is unlikely to … more

Barrelet zeros and elastic. pi. /sup +/p partial waves. [1. 2 to 2. 2 GeV, partial-wave amplitudes]

Description: A procedure is proposed for constructing low-order partial-wave amplitudes from a knowledge of Barrelet zeros near the physical region. The method is applied to the zeros already obtained for elastic ..pi../sup +/p scattering data between 1.2 and 2.2 GeV cm energies. The partial waves emerge with errors that are straight-forwardly related to the accuracy of the data and satisfy unitarity without any constraint being imposed. There are significant differences from the partial waves obtained by o… more

Direct production of muons in the forward direction by 300-GeV protons on uranium

Description: An experiment involving direct production of muons by 300 GeV protons on uranium was undertaken in order to determine if the ..mu../..pi.. ratio of 10/sup -4/ is consistent with the idea that the muons are decay products of massive mesons. Processes such as vector meson decay and Bethe--Heitler conversions of photons contribute about 20 percent to the measured signal. The interpretation of the excess signal is not definite. (SDF)
