Dielectric strengths of new gases and gas mixtures

Description: It is emphasized that the most effective gaseous dielectrics are gas mixtures with components chosen on the basis of fundamental physicochemical knowledge, especially on low-energy electron-molecule interactions. On the basis of such lnowledge, especially on electron attachment and electron slowing down, a number of new gases and gas mixtures have been found with breakdown strengths superior to pure SF/sub 6/. These include the unitary gases c-C/sub 4/F/sub 8/ (perfluorocyclobutane), C/sub 4/F/… more

Draft 1992 : Operations, Maintenance, and Replacement 10-Year Plan.

Description: Two years ago, BPA released its first-ever Operations, Maintenance, and Replacement (OM R) 10-Year Plan. That effort broke new ground and was an extensive look at the condition of Operations, Maintenance, and Replacement on BPA's power system. This document -- the 1992 OM R 10-Year Plan -- uses that original plan as its foundation. It takes a look at how well BPA has accomplished the challenging task set out in the 1990 Plan. The 1992 Plan also introduces the Construction Program. Construction'… more

Wave propagation in a dc superconducting cable, Part I: analysis

Description: A dc superconducting cable design consisting of four concentric metallic cylinders, of which two carry the load current and two comprise the cryogenic enclosure, is considered. When a transient voltage is impressed across such a cable, the major dielectric may not be fully stressed to its design value, and unwanted voltage stresses may develop across other parts of the cable. The surge-voltage propagation characteristics of a four-conductor dc superconducting cable for a step-function input vol… more

Outages of electric power supply resulting from cable failures Boston Edison Company system

Description: Factual data are provided regarding 5 electric power supply interruptions that occurred in the Boston Metropolitan area during April to June, 1979. Common to all of these outages was the failure of an underground cable as the initiating event, followed by multiple equipment failures. There was significant variation in the voltage ratings and types of cables which failed. The investigation was unable to delineate a single specific Boston Edison design operating or maintenance practice that could… more

Assessment study of superconducting fault-current limiters operating at 77K

Description: The possible impact of nitrogen-cooled superconductors on the design and cost of superconducting fault-current limiters is assessed by considering the technical specifications such devices must meet and by comparing material properties of 77-K and 4-K superconductors. The main advantage of operating superconductors at 77 K is that the refrigeration operating cost is reduced by a factor of up to 25, and the refrigeration capital cost is reduced by a factor of up to 10. The heat capacity of 77 K … more

Development of an improved extruded dielectric cable rated 230 kV

Description: Work performed on developing an improved 230 kV extruded solid dielectric cable, the techniques of jointing such cables and the testing of terminations suitable for operation at that voltage level are described. Difficulties were encountered during manufacture in applying the semi-conducting extruded conductor shield. A new higher melt point compound solved the problem. A joint capable of operating at the 230 kV level was developed but showed a deficiency under voltage impulse testing while the… more

Improved vacuum surface flashover performance of polymer insulators by the use of unique triple junction designs

Description: Previous research and theories about surface flashover in vacuum indicate that the triple junction region plays a critical role in the insulator flashover process. To attempt to improve upon the performance of the standard 45-degree frustum insulator, three different insulator geometries with modified triple junction regions were investigated. Two samples of each geometry, each 2 cm thick, were tested to obtain the flashover voltage levels in a low 10{sup {minus}5} Torr vacuum using a 1.2-micro… more
