Seismic risk analysis for General Electric Plutonium Facility, Pleasanton, California. Final report, part II

Description: This report is the second of a two part study addressing the seismic risk or hazard of the special nuclear materials (SNM) facility of the General Electric Vallecitos Nuclear Center at Pleasanton, California. The Part I companion to this report, dated July 31, 1978, presented the seismic hazard at the site that resulted from exposure to earthquakes on the Calaveras, Hayward, San Andreas and, additionally, from smaller unassociated earthquakes that could not be attributed to these specific fault… more

Analysis of well test data---Application of probabilistic models to infer hydraulic properties of fractures. [Contains list of standardized terminology or nomenclatue used in statistical models]

Description: Statistical and probabilistic methods for estimating the probability that a fracture is nonconductive (or equivalently, the conductive-fracture frequency) and the distribution of the transmissivities of conductive fractures from transmissivity measurements made in single-hole injection (well) tests were developed. These methods were applied to a database consisting of over 1,000 measurements made in nearly 25 km of borehole at five sites in Sweden. The depths of the measurements ranged from nea… more

DEMONSTRATION OF EQUIVALENCY OF CANE AND SOFTWOOD BASED CELOTEX FOR MODEL 9975 SHIPPING PACKAGES

Description: Cane-based Celotex{trademark} has been used extensively in various Department of Energy (DOE) packages as a thermal insulator and impact absorber. Cane-based Celotex{trademark} fiberboard was only manufactured by Knight-Celotex Fiberboard at their Marrero Plant in Louisiana. However, Knight-Celotex Fiberboard shut down their Marrero Plant in early 2007 due to impacts from hurricane Katrina and other economic factors. Therefore, cane-based Celotex{trademark} fiberboard is no longer available for… more

Enzyme Activity Probe and Geochemical Assessment for Potential Aerobic Cometabolism of Trichloroethene in Groundwater of the Northwest Plume, Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Kentucky

Description: The overarching objective of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) enzyme activity probe (EAP) effort is to determine if aerobic cometabolism is contributing to the attenuation of trichloroethene (TCE) and other chlorinated solvents in the contaminated groundwater beneath PGDP. The site-specific objective for the EAP assessment is to identify if key metabolic pathways are present and expressed in the microbial community--namely the pathways that are responsible for degradation of methane a… more

Decontamination of Zircaloy Spent Fuel Cladding Hulls

Description: The reprocessing of commercial spent nuclear fuel (SNF) generates a Zircaloy cladding hull waste which requires disposal as a high level waste in the geologic repository. The hulls are primarily contaminated with fission products and actinides from the fuel. During fuel irradiation, these contaminants are deposited in a thin layer of zirconium oxide (ZrO{sub 2}) which forms on the cladding surface at the elevated temperatures present in a nuclear reactor. Therefore, if the hulls are treated to … more

Nondestructive, energy-dispersive, x-ray fluorescence analysis of actinide stream concentrations from reprocessed nuclear fuels

Description: In one plan for reprocessing LWR spent fuel, after separation from fission products and transplutonics, part of the U and all of the Pu in a nitrate solution will form a coprocessed stream which is then evaporated and sent to a hold tank for accounting. The remaining U fraction will be purified and sent to a separate storage tank. These two streams can be monitored using x-ray fluorescence analysis. This report discusses equipment, spectra, cell calibration, and dynamic concentration measuremen… more

Measurement of outdoor noise levels adjacent to K-25 facility, ORGDP

Description: In order to obtain baseline data on environmental sound for a report on the expected environmental effects of constructing an incinerator adjacent to the ORGDP, an abbreviated measurement program was carried out. Ten measurement locations were selected for the measurements, six being representative of the ORGDP fenceline, and four representative of the surrounding area. Measurements consisted of short-term octave-band measurements and one-half hour A-weighted exceedance levels. It had been prev… more

Present status and future direction of plutonium process chemistry

Description: Large-scale plutonium recovery/processing facilities are currently operated at the US Department of Energy Hanford, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Rocky Flats, and Savannah River Sites. This paper presents an overview of plutonium process chemistry used at these sites, with particular emphasis on solution chemistry involved in recovery, purification, and waste treatment operations. By extrapolating from the present system of processes, this paper also attempts to chart the future direction of … more

AFR spent fuel storage program. Technical progress report, October 1980-December 1980

Description: Work on this project is focused on developing design and licensing information for the model facility. Facility modification designs and studies scheduled in 1980 have been completed with a draft report forwarded to DOE for review. Subcontracts for additional rack design analysis to include disassembled fuel were approved by DOE in late December and will be completed in mid-April. Essentially all the security design and licensing documentation work have been completed with the major effort rema… more

Technical options for the future of West Valley

Description: The West Valley Processing Plant reprocessed spent fuel from 1966 to 1972. It was shut down in 1972 for modifications, and in 1976 NFS decided not to renew the lease. This paper discusses the technical options for dealing with the financial responsibilities. The study shows that there is a range of options for both decommissioning and continued use of the plant with decommissioning involving either the immobilization or the off-site disposal of the wastes. Precipitation of cerium sulfate

Description: Cerium sulfate purified by D2EHPA in Semiworks can be precipitated by adjusting pH to between 1 and 2 in tank 6 with 50% caustic. The solution can then be transferred through tank 1 to tank 67, where sodium bisulfate is added to make the solution 0.5M sulfate. A stoichiometric amount (mole for mole) of 50% caustic is added to just neutralize the sodium bisulfate. The precipitate is digested one hour at 60 C, then filtered.

Description: The data described in this report were collected as part of a project to explore the viability of passive soil vapor extraction techniques for removal of volatile organic contaminants from the subsurface. The principal objectives of this project are to determine the mechanism and physical dynamics of the relationship between surface atmospheric pressure and subsurface flow and contaminant transport, and to use this information to design cost effective and efficient remediation systems. This wor… more

Production test IP-310-A-FP, determination of the dimensional stability of uranium fuel cores classified by the fuel core tester (UT-2)

Description: Since it is now possible to obtain a heat-treated U core that is randomly oriented and has a finer average grain size, it is necessary to irradiate measured, transformed fuel cores over the full range of grain sizes, in order to compare relative dimensional stabilities. An improved ultrasonic tester, Fuel Core Tester-UT-2, is used to test all fuel cores.

Major issues associated with DOE commercial recycling initiatives

Description: Major initiatives are underway within DOE to recycle large volumes of scrap material generated during cleanup of the DOE Weapons Complex. These recycling initiatives are driven not only by the desire to conserve natural resources, but also by the recognition that shallow level burial is not a politically acceptable option. The Fernald facility is in the vanguard of a number of major DOE recycling efforts. These early efforts have brought issues to light that can have a major impact on the abili… more
