Thermal Diffusion Development Design of Main Equipment

Description: This paper presents a scope design of two coaxial type thermal diffusion columns. These experimental columns are proposed to meet the requirements of the research and development program given in Part 2 of this report series. They would rearrange the isotopes of xenon from the Case II product of the Purex Gas Separations Facility to yield a product with a composite neutron absorption cross section of less than one barn. The theoretical basis for the design is given in Part 1. The auxiliary equi… more

Novel wave/ion beam interaction approach to isotope separation

Description: Numerical simulations and experimental studies have been made related to the possibility of employing an externally imposed electrostatic potential wave to separate isotopes. This wave/ion interaction is a sensitive function of the wave/ion difference velocity and for the appropriate wave amplitude and wave speed, a lighter faster isotope will be reflected by the wave to a higher energy while leaving heavier, slower isotopes virtually undisturbed in energy -- allowing subsequent ion separation … more

Improvements to the helium-jet coupled on-line mass separator RAMA

Description: Some general improvements to the on-line mass separator RAMA have yielded a factor of five increase in yield for most elements. By placing the ion source region at the full accelerating potential of 20 kV, the effective skimmer-plasma distance has been reduced from 12 cm to <2 cm. Changes in the helium-jet chamber and large volume pumping arrangement necessitated by placing the ion source region at high voltage are also given. Finally, details for a new highly shielded detector station are pres… more

Flow in a metal hydride chromatographic column

Description: The flow of hydrogen isotopes in a metal hydride chromatographic column is calculated by a one-dimensional finite difference method. The Ergun equation is used to define the gas flow; and equilibrium pressure isotherms are used to define the column holdup. Solid phase loadings are shown to move as a wave front on absorption, but remain more uniform on desorption. 3 refs., 4 figs.

Thermal Diffusion Development Design of Experiments

Description: The Facilities Engineering Operation of the Chemical Processing Department prepared a process study scope design of a large thermal diffusion plant for xenon isotope separation. This scoping was done perforce on the basis of calculations made from exclusively theoretical considerations because actual design data are not available. The designers are of the opinion, however, that, such a basis is not adequate to justify the construction of the plant and have, therefore, requested that an appropri… more

Thermal diffusion development design parameter calculations for a pilot thermal diffusion apparatus. Part 1

Description: Atomic Energy Commission has expressed interest in obtaining xenon with a composite neutron absorption cross section of less than one barn. This material may be obtainable from the off-gas of the Purex dissolver. A proposed gas purification facility would process the Purex off-gas through two distillation steps for isolation of a ``rough`` cut of xenon isotopes containing principally Xe{sup 131}, Xe{sup 132}, Xe{sup 134}, Xe{sup 136}, and a small quantity of krypton. This material would become … more

Pressure and field strength considerations on the plasma centrifuge for isotope separation

Description: The plasma centrifuge is shown to give an isotope separation ratio alpha approximately equal to the gamma power of the rotationally induced pressure ratio, where gamma is isotope mass difference divided by mean particle mass. This assumes an ideal gas model. An analytical solution for the velocity profile is found for viscous incompressible conducting fluid with radial electric current and axial magnetic field in a cylindrical annulus. The separation ratio is estimated as the ..delta..m/m power… more

Analysis of LaNi{sub 4.25}Al{sub 0.75} (LANA.75) tritide after five years of tritium exposure

Description: Tritium aging studies have shown that LaNi{sub 4.25}Al{sub 0.75} (LANA .75) tritide storage material undergoes significant degradation with tritium aging. After 5.4 years of dormant storage at full stoichiometry, which is considered a worst-case condition for this material, the performance is still acceptable for SRS tritium processing applications. The isotherms change, decreasing the desorption pressures, increasing the isotherm plateau slopes, and decreasing the total storage capacity. Event… more

Statistical theory of electronic energy relaxation

Description: A 'statistical method' is developed for treating electronic and electronic-translational energy transfer in systems of atoms having multiple electronic states. This method is based on the assumption that the states produced in a collision are distributed according to the equilibrium distribution for the energy available to the collision partners. The approach is readily incorporated into Monte Carlo gas dynamic calculations. Results of such calculations are reported for several cases of relaxat… more

Monitoring PVD metal vapors using laser absorption spectroscopy

Description: Laser absorption spectroscopy (LAS) has been used by the Atomic Vapor Laser Isotope Separation (AVLIS) program for over 10 years to monitor the co-vaporization of uranium and iron in its separators. During that time, LAS has proven to be an accurate and reliable method to monitor both the density and composition of the vapor. It has distinct advantages over other rate monitors, in that it is completely non-obtrusive to the vaporization process and its accuracy is unaffected by the duration of t… more
