Remediation of uranium mill tailings by an integrated biological and chemical process

Description: Dilute calcium chloride brine solution was found to be effective in the solubilization of toxic heavy metals and long half-life radionuclides (Th-230, Ra-226 and Pb-210) from uranium ores and mill tailings. The recovery of heavy metals and radionuclides from uranium mill tailing effluents was studied with calcium alginate beads. The maximum cadmium and zinc uptakes by calcium alginate beads were determined to be 2.8 {times} 10{sup {minus}3} and 2.3 {times} 10{sup {minus}3} mol/dry weight of alg… more

Production of metal waste forms from spent fuel treatment

Description: Treatment of spent nuclear fuel at Argonne National Laboratory consists of a pyroprocessing scheme in which the development of suitable waste forms is being advanced. Of the two waste forms being proposed, metal and mineral, the production of the metal waste form utilizes induction melting to stabilize the waste product. Alloying of metallic nuclear materials by induction melting has long been an Argonne strength and thus, the transition to metallic waste processing seems compatible. A test pro… more

A chemical model for the major electrolyte components of the Hanford waste tanks. The binary electrolytes in the system: Na-NO{sub 3}-NO{sub 2}-SO{sub 4}-CO{sub 3}-F-PO{sub 4}-OH-AI(OH){sub 4}-H{sub 2}O

Description: An aqueous thermodynamic model is developed, based on the equations of Pitzer, which accurately model the major binary electrolytes in the Na-NO{sub 3}-NO{sub 2}-SO{sub 4}-CO{sub 3}-F-PO{sub 4}-OH-Al(OH){sub 4}-H{sub 2}O chemical system. This model was developed both from existing data in the literature, and from new osmotic and solubility measurements made as part of this study. Some of the new experimental data developed as part of this study include measurements of osmotic coefficients for N… more

Technology transfer, a two-way street

Description: Technology transfer through the Pollution Prevention & Control Conferences, which have been cosponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency and by the professional societies of industry, greatly improved the environmental projects of the Department of Energy at Savannah River Site (SRS) in the mid-1980`s. Those technologies, used in the liquid effluent treatment of the metal finishing liquid effluents from aluminum cleaning and nickel plating of fuel and targets for the nuclear production re… more

Development of radionuclide separation technologies for processing of Idaho Chemical Processing Plant spent fuel and HLW calcine

Description: Irradiated nuclear fuel has been reprocessed at the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant (ICPP), which is a part of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL), since 1953 to recover uranium-235 and krypton-85 for the US Department of Energy (DOE). The resulting acidic high-level liquid radioactive waste (HLLW) has been solidified to a high-level waste (HLW) calcine since 1963 and stored in stainless-steel bins enclosed in concrete vaults. Residual HLW and radioactive sodium-bearing waste are s… more

Stainless steel recycle FY94 progress report

Description: The Materials Technology Section (MTS) of the Savannah River Technology Center (SRTC) was asked to demonstrate the practicality of recycling previously contaminated stainless steel components such as reactor heat exchanger heads, process water piping and slug buckets into 208 liters (55 gallon) drums and 2.8 cubic meter (100 ft{sup 3}) storage boxes. Radioactively contaminated stainless steel scrap will be sent to several industrial partners where it will be melted, decontaminated/cast into ing… more

Possible explosive compounds in the Savannah River Site waste tank farm facilities

Description: Based on a comparison of the known constituents in high-level nuclear waste stored at the Savannah River Site (SRS) and explosive compounds reported in the literature, only two classes of explosive compounds (metal NO{sub x} compounds and organic compounds) were identified as requiring further work to determine if they exist in the waste, and if so, in what quantities. Of the fourteen classes of explosive compounds identified as conceivably being present in tank farm operations, nine classes (m… more

Preliminary remedial action objectives for the Tank 16 groundwater operable unit

Description: Tank 16 is a High Level Radioactive Waste tank in the H-Area Tank Farm on the Savannah River Site that was placed into service in May 1959. A leak was detected in one of the construction weld joints while the tank was being filled. Before jet evacuation of the tank waste was completed, the leak overflowed the annulus pan and an estimated 16 to 700 gallons of waste escaped to the environment (soil and groundwater) over a six hour period contaminating approximately 1,600--70,000 cubic feet of soi… more

Cesium removal from Hanford tank waste

Description: Researchers at PNL are developing ion exchange processes to remove cesium from high salt, alkaline tank wastes at the Hanford site. The separated cesium will be concentrated and vitrified for disposal in the High-Level Waste Repository. The low-level waste fraction containing the majority of the waste constituents will be solidified in a grout waste form for disposal in underground concrete vaults. While the treatment and disposal requirements are still being defined, one goal is to remove enou… more
