Identification of geothermal reserves and estimation of their value

Description: A procedure, is discussed for estimating the value of a hot water geothermal property from a resource owner's point of view. Two methods make up the procedure: a conservative method of estimation and an optimistic one. Value of a property by both methods is estimated to equal the present value of future income less the cost of resource extraction. The two methods share a common set of assumptions (e.g., that the price of hot water at the start of cash flow from a project will be the same). Howe… more

Federal geothermal royalty income derived from the benefits of government-sponsored R and D

Description: The ability of Federally-sponsored geothermal R and D to, in effect, pay for itself through increased royalty payments resulting from enhanced resource development on Federal lands is investigated. The report concludes that achievement of current Federal R and D objectives is likely to result in significant royalty returns to both state and Federal governments. These returns are measured in terms of the increase in royalty payments attributable to the achievement of Federal R and D objectives, … more

Evaluation of the St. Lucia geothermal resource: macroeconomic models

Description: A macroeconometric model describing the St. Lucian economy was developed using 1970 to 1982 economic data. Results of macroeconometric forecasts for the period 1983 through 1985 show an increase in gross domestic product (GDP) for 1983 and 1984 with a decline in 1985. The rate of population growth is expected to exceed GDP growth so that a small decline in per capita GDP will occur. We forecast that garment exports will increase, providing needed employment and foreign exchange. To obtain a lon… more

Price estimates of hot-water geothermal energy

Description: A generalized price equation for hot water geothermal energy has been developed. The equation is based on analysis of proposed plans for use of geothermal energy to displace specific quantities of fossil fuels. The equation is useful in starting negotiations for sale of heat from a hot water resource and is necessary in any reserve valuation in the absence of a firm sales contract. The sales price of the only known hot water geothermal energy sales contract is presently 0.082 mills/1bm and comp… more

Impact of common problems in geothermal drilling and completion

Description: Problems that arise in geothermal drilling and completion account for a significant portion of geothermal well costs. In order to evaluate new technologies for combatting these problems, the relative frequencies and severities of different problems have been estimated. The estimates were based on both subjective judgements and analysis of available drilling records. The most common problems include lost circulation, stuck pipe and cementing, and their impact is to increase well cost by an avera… more

Economics of magma power generation

Description: An analysis of the economics of generating electricity using magma reservoirs as the energy source indicates that magma-based energy could be roughly competitive with existing sources of electricity. The conclusion seems justified even though the analysis requires many assumptions that may or may not prove to be realistic as technology advances. Another important result of this analysis that is not dependent on the state of technology is the identification of the parameters that have the larges… more

Social and economic research program for the Geysers-Calistoga known geothermal resource area

Description: The purpose of this study is to assess the economic and social effects of projected geothermal resource development for both direct use and electric power generation and to analyze local regulatory policy options designed to mitigate adverse effects. The key issues are land use, fiscal and public infrastructure systems, demography, and the local economy. The study has seven elements: a computer-based inventory and analysis of land characteristics, constraints, sensitivity, and suitability for v… more

National Geothermal Association Trade Mission to Central America

Description: The United States (US) geothermal industry, the world's most technically proficient, has been unable to achieve penetration into the markets of the developing nations. This report details the findings of an industry Trade Mission to Central America, tasked with determining the reasons for this shortfall and with developing a US industry geothermal export strategy designed to achieve immediate and long-term export benefits.

Geothermal heating

Description: The aim of the study is to demonstrate the viability of geothermal heating projects in energy and economic terms and to provide nomograms from which an initial estimate may be made without having to use data-processing facilities. The effect of flow rate and temperature of the geothermal water on drilling and on the network, and the effect of climate on the type of housing are considered.

Industrial applications of hot dry rock geothermal energy

Description: Geothermal resources in the form of naturally occurring hot water or steam have been utilized for many years. While these hydrothermal resources are found in many places, the general case is that the rock at depth is hot, but does not contain significant amounts of mobile fluid. An extremely large amount of geothermal energy is found around the world in this hot dry rock (HDR). Technology has been under development for more than twenty years at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United S… more

The feasibility of applying geopressured-geothermal resources to direct uses

Description: This study concludes that direct use technologies, especially desalinated water production, can contribute significantly to the value added process and the overall economic viability in developing a geopressured resource. Although agriculture and aquaculture applications are marginal projects when they are the only use of a geopressured well, the small margin of profitability can contribute to improving the overall economics of the direct use development. The added complexity from a technical a… more

Geothermal development plan: Cochise/Santa Cruz Counties

Description: The Cochise/Santa Cruz Counties Area Development Plan evaluated the regional market potential for utilizing geothermal energy. The study identified three potential geothermal resource areas with potential for resource temperatures less than 90/sup 0/C (194/sup 0/F). Geothermal resources are found to occur near the towns of Willcox, San Simon, and Bowier. Population growth rates are expected to average three percent per year over the next 30 years in Willcox; Bowie and San Simon are expected to … more

Description: This report presents the results of an economic study conducted by the INEL under DOE Contract No. AC07-76ID01570 to evaluate the breakeven price to market energy from a geopressured-geothermal resource. A breakeven price is a minimum, per unit charge required for the developer to recover all direct and indirect costs and a rate of return sufficient to compensate the developer for depreciation, the time value of money, and the risk of failure. The DOE Geopressured-Geothermal Research Program an… more
