Toronto Litter Snapshot

Description: The City of Toronto (Ontario, Canada) is home to nearly 3 million people living near the shores of Lake Ontario. In 2023, litter traps were installed at three locations in the harbourfront and maintained over a period of five months. These trash capture devices intercepted floating litter and prevented it from flowing farther downstream. The goal? To stop litter in its tracks and raise public awareness about the flow of litter downstream to the ocean.

Taking Stock: 2009 North American Pollutant Releases and Transfers

Description: North American PRTR data show that total releases and transfers reported by facilities across the region increased from more than 5.1 billion kilograms (kg) in 2014 to almost 5.3 billion kg in 2018. On-site disposal or releases to land, together with off-site transfers to recycling, accounted for approximately two-thirds of the annual totals, while releases to air and water accounted for approximately 7% and 4%, respectively.

Description: The report focuses on North-South (and equally, South-North) freight transportation between Canada, Mexico and the United States. The principal environmental goal examined was to find ways to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which account for 95% or more of all freight transportation-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
