The Dallas Story: the North American Aviation Plant and Industrial Mobilization During World War II

Description: During World War II the United States mobilized its industrial assets to become the great “Arsenal of Democracy” through the cooperation of the government and private firms. The Dallas Story examines a specific aviation factory, operated by the North American Aviation (NAA) company in Dallas, Texas. Terrance Furgerson explores the construction and opening of the factory, its operation, its relations with the local community, and the closure of the facility at the end of the war. Prior to the o… more

Death and Life in the Big Red One: a Soldier's World War II Journey from North Africa to Germany

Description: Joe Olexa enlisted in the US Army in December 1940, figuring that if he was going to be in a war, he might as well start training. Assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, nicknamed “The Big Red One,” he served in Company L of its 26th Infantry Regiment for the next four years. Along the way he trained with the division in maneuvers in the United States; shipped to England in 1942; landed at Oran, Algeria, in the Operation Torch landings of November 1942; and fought in Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, … more

Infrared radiative switching with thermally and electrically tunable transition metal oxides-based plasmonic grating

Description: Article says that plasmonic and phase transition has been blended to gain the infrared radiative switching which is tunable with temperature or voltage supply. This is applied via vanadium dioxide, tungsten trioxide, and molybdenum trioxide as transition metal oxides (TMO), the authors state that the work expands the usage of transition metal oxides in infrared region with larger contrast.

Transgenic manipulation of triacylglycerol biosynthetic enzymes in B. napus alters lipid-associated gene expression and lipid metabolism

Description: Article asserts that oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is an important crop that is cultivated for the oil (mainly triacylglycerol; TAG) it produces in its seeds. The author's results show that up-regulation of these key enzymes differentially affects lipid composition and distribution as well as lipid-associated gene expression, providing important information which could be used to improve crop properties by metabolic engineering.

Toward an intentional model aware of learner cognitive traits for pedagogical process guidance

Description: Article discusses how previous research on adaptive learning successfully demonstrated that use of Intentional Model for Educational Processes Guidance has gained popularity in Intelligent Tutoring System. Authors say that their proposed model leads to generate an individualized learning for each learner by selecting the most appropriate pedagogical process according to the actual preferences of the tutor and the cognitive traits of learner.

Genetic Differentiation of the South Florida Red-Shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus extimus) from the Nominate Subspecies (Buteo lineatus lineatus)

Description: Article discusses how the south Florida subspecies of the Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus extimus) is distinctly paler and smaller than other subspecies, reproduces at a lower rate, and can occupy very different habitats such as open marshes and grasslands with only scattered trees. The authors evaluated population differentiation between the south Florida population of Red-shouldered Hawks and two populations of eastern Red-shouldered Hawks (B. l. lineatus) in suburban (Cincinnati) and rur… more

A Novel Hybrid Edge Detection and LBP Code-Based Robust Image Steganography Method

Description: Article describes how in digital image processing and steganography, images are often described using edges and local binary pattern (LBP) codes. The authors state that by combining these two properties, a novel hybrid image steganography method of secret embedding is proposed in this paper.

Lithium-CO2 batteries and beyond

Description: Article describes how Li-CO2 batteries with a theoretical energy density of 1,876 Wh kg−1 are attractive as a promising energy storage strategy and as an effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by CO2 reduction and the formation of discharge product Li2CO3 and carbon. This article provides critical perspectives on the development of Li-CO2 batteries as well as a description of current issues and challenges associated with cathode catalysts, electrolyte, and anode for Li-CO2 batteries.

The association between posttraumatic disorder symptoms and addictive behaviours in Macao within a sample of female Filipino migrant workers: a network analysis

Description: Article describes how Filipino migrant workers in Macao are vulnerable to posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) symptoms and addictive behaviours due to trauma histories, postmigration stressors, and access to alcohol and gambling venues. The current study investigated differential relations between PTSD symptoms and addictive behaviours in a polytrauma exposed sample of Filipino domestic workers in Macao(SAR), China.

Effects of cultivar and nitrogen application rate on lint, seed, oil, and protein yields of field-grown cotton

Description: Article describes how cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is not only the dominant fiber crop grown worldwide, but it is also an important source of plant-based oil and protein. The objective of this study was to evaluate the lint, seed, oil, and protein yield responses of cultivars with different seed mass and composition to N application rates (0–168 kg N ha−1) for field-grown cotton.

FERONIA and wall-associated kinases coordinate defense induced by lignin modification in plant cell walls

Description: Article discusses authors' findings that through genetic screening for suppressors of defense gene induction in the low lignin ccr1-3 mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana, we found that loss of function of the receptor-like kinase FERONIA, although not restoring growth, affected cell wall remodeling and blocked release of elicitor-active pectic polysaccharides as a result of the ccr1-3 mutation. They determine that engineering plant cell walls will require development of ways to bypass endogenous pec… more

POSMM: an efficient alignment-free metagenomic profiler that complements alignment-based profiling

Description: Article presents POSMM, Python-Optimized Standard Markov Model classifier, which is a new incarnation of the Markov model approach to metagenomic sequence analysis. The authors claim that by combining POSMM with ultrafast classifiers such as Kraken2, their complementary strengths can be leveraged to produce higher overall accuracy in metagenomic sequence classification than by either as a standalone classifier. POSMM is a user-friendly and highly adaptable tool designed for broad use by the met… more

A content analysis of research on technology use for teaching mathematics to students with disabilities: word networks and topic modeling

Description: Authors of article conduct a content analysis of research on technology use for teaching mathematics to students with disabilities. They applied word networks and structural topic modeling of 488 studies published from 1980 to 2021. Results showed that the words “computer” and “computer-assisted instruction” had the highest degree of centrality in the 1980s and 1990s, and “learning disability” was another central word in the 2000s and 2010s.

A modified aeroponic system for growing small-seeded legumes and other plants to study root systems

Description: Authors of the article state that various growth systems are available for studying plant root growth and plant–microbe interactions including hydroponics and aeroponics. The aim of their study is to present step-by-step instructions for fabricating an aeroponic system, also called a “caisson,” that has been in use in several legume research labs studying the development of symbiotic nitrogen fixing nodules, but for which detailed directions are not currently available.
