Darex Pilot Plant Studies

Description: The Atomic Energy Commission has assigned the Hanford Atomic Products Operation the responsibility of providing the technology and facilities for the interim reprocessing of slightly enriched uranium fuels discharged from power and propulsion reactors. The fuel from the various reactors vary greatly in physical dimensions and in the composition of the core and cladding. For the purposes of chemical reprocessing, the fuels may be divided into the three main categories of aluminum, Zircaloy or st… more

Effect of the PRTR High Pressure Loop on Plutonium Recycle Program Objectives

Description: For purposes of an earlier consideration of the effects of in-reactor test loops on PRTR operation and program, the design of the high pressure, H20 cooled fuel test loop was assumed to be similar to that for the high pressure, gas cooled loop. Detailed design criteria for the H20 loop have recently been completed so that this assumption is no longer necessary. Therefore, to insure that the effects of all proposed in-reactor loops are fully evaluated with respect to Plutonium Recycle Program ob… more

Metabolism and Distribution of Inhaled Plutonium in Rats

Description: From abstract: "Several different techniques were used to introduce tracer quantities of plutonium into the lungs of rats. When aerosols were produced by atomizing aqueous solutions of the nitrates it was found that approximately 20 per cent of the dose was absorbed and deposited in the skelton [sic] with tetra-, hexa-, and trivalent plutonium. Thus with these compounds, the lungs represent a more dangerous portal of entry than either oral (0.05 per cent) or intramuscular (13 per cent) administ… more

Radiolytic gas generation in plutonium contaminated waste materials

Description: Many plutonium contaminated waste materials decompose into gaseous products because of exposure to alpha radiation. The gases generated (usually hydrogen) over long-storage periods may create hazardous conditions. To determine the extent of such hazards, knowing the gas generation yields is necessary. These yields were measured by contacting some common Rocky Flats Plant waste materials with plutonium and monitoring the enclosed atmospheres for extensive periods of time. The materials were Plex… more

Experimental test of gas heat transfer system for hydroxide heat storage

Description: In the development of a heat storage system based on inorganic hydroxide--oxide chemical transitions, the method of transferring heat into and out of the hydroxide storage material is of prime importance. This report presents the results of a series of tests using circulating gas as a means of heat transfer. On the basis of these results, it is concluded that circulating gas is a technically feasible concept, using steam as heat transfer fluid and using the chemical in the form of a fixed bed o… more

Concurrent studies of enhanced heat transfer and materials for ocean thermal exchangers. Progress report

Description: Aluminum alloys 1100, 3003, 5052, and 6063 were examined for their compatibility with the proposed working fluids for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), anhydrous ammonia, Freon 22 and propane, and mixtures of these with sea water. Such mixtures would occur if leaks develop in evaporator or condenser heat exchangers. These aluminum alloys are compatible with the anhydrous working fluids. In ammonia-sea water solutions only limited general corrosion is found in 0 to 30 percent ammonia, no c… more

Scalable nonlinear iterative methods for partial differential equations

Description: We conducted a six-month investigation of the design, analysis, and software implementation of a class of singularity-insensitive, scalable, parallel nonlinear iterative methods for the numerical solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. The solutions of nonlinear PDEs are often nonsmooth and have local singularities, such as sharp fronts. Traditional nonlinear iterative methods, such as Newton-like methods, are capable of reducing the global smooth nonlinearities at a nearly quadra… more

Developing a tuned version of scaLAPACK's linear equation solver

Description: The LINPACK Benchmark has been used as a yardstick in measuring the performance of the Top500 installed high-end computers. This benchmark was chosen because it is widely used and performance numbers are available for almost all relevant systems. The approach used in the LINPACK Benchmark is to solve a dense system of linear equations. For the Top500, the benchmark allows the user to scale the size of the problem and to optimize the software in order to achieve the best performance for a given … more

Statistical Analysis of F001-F005 Spent Solvent Concentrations in Tank Wastes

Description: A large quantity of mixed waste is generated at the Hanford Site from maintenance, sampling, analysis and research performed on tank waste. The majority of this waste contains only trace residues of actual tank waste and would be expected to contain a low concentration of spent solvent constituents. This paper gives a statistical methodology to find estimates of the mean concentration, as well as the 90th and 95th percentile of the concentration distribution, along with their respective upper 9… more

Applying Seismic Methods to National Security Problems: Matched Field Processing With Geological Heterogeneity

Description: Seismic imaging and tracking methods have intelligence and monitoring applications. Current systems, however, do not adequately calibrate or model the unknown geological heterogeneity. Current systems are also not designed for rapid data acquisition and analysis in the field. This project seeks to build the core technological capabilities coupled with innovative deployment, processing, and analysis methodologies to allow seismic methods to be effectively utilized in the applications of seismic … more
