Environmental effects and energy efficiencies for geothermal energy, western strip-mined coal, and eastern underground mined coal applied to space heating, process heat, and electric drive were compared. The measure of an environmental effect is the amount of residual material released to the environment, and the measure of energy efficiency is the second law efficiency of the process involved.
