Evaluation of The Texas Company Airborne Radioactivity Survey at Blanding, Utah

Description: Purpose and scope: The purpose of this report is to present an analysis and evaluation of the airborne radioactivity survey of the Blanding, Utah district conducted by The Texas Company on behalf of the Atomic energy Commission. Within the scope of the report, only the results of the airborne survey and the data used in its evaluation are presented. No attempt is made to discuss the details of the survey or of the drilling program conducted in the area. A separate report by P. 1. Melanoon, on the drilling program is in preparation.

Operation of an In-Reactor Loop Capsule for the Determination of "G" Values for the Production of NO₂ in N₂-O₂ Systems

Description: Partial abstract: "The direct utilization of fission fragment recoil energy in chemical production shows outstanding promise as a significant application of atomic energy. Highly efficient use of the liberatied energy under high temperature conditions and with unusually rapid quenching is within engineering grasp. This contract has covered a measurement of the efficiency with which nitric acid can be produced by such a process under industrial plant conditions. Equipment, techniques, and instrumentation were developed and perfected which permitted an in-reactor yield measurement using fissile smoke dispersed in a 4:1 nitrogen-oxygen gas mixture at 1000 psi and 200 C" (p. iii).

The Machinability of Beryllium

Description: The following report investigates the isolation of the cause of the unusual tool-wear rates found in machining beryllium as attributed to an inherent characteristic of beryllium, or an effect of inclusions in beryllium, as well as the evaluation of the comparative machinability of the various types of beryllium.

Purification of Uranium Tetrachloride by Fractional Condensation

Description: "The effect of a single vacuum sublimation of contaminated uranium tetrachloride, with fractional condensation of the vapors, was investigated to determine whether a high degree of purity would result. It was found that this procedure was an excellent and simple method for obtaining exceedingly pure uranium tetrachloride."

Summary of Research on Experimental Refractory Bodies of High-Melting Nitrides, Carbides, and Uranium Dioxide

Description: Abstract: A procedure for the preparation of the nitrides and carbides of several metals and the preparation of the refractory bodies from them is described. The investigation shows that reasonably strong and dense bodies can be prepared from these materials as well as from UO₂. Evidence showing the tendency toward instability at high temperatures of Be₃N₂, TaN, and ThN is presented. Evidence is also given indicating that the hexagonal structure reported by others for TaN is actually that for Ta₂N. A lattice for Th₂N₃ is proposed. The melting points of ThN, UN, and UC are determined to be 2630 ± 50°C,2650 ± 100°C, and 2590 ± 50°C respectively.

The Heat of Formation of Thorium Sesquisulfide

Description: Abstract: "The heat of solution of thorium sesquisulfide was determined in 6.000 molar HCl at 25 C to ascertain the stability of the thorium (III) halides. The molal heat of formation of Th2S3 from rhombic sulfur and crystalline thorium is calculated as 258.6 kcal."

Some Properties of High-Purity Zirconium and Dilute Alloys With Oxygen

Description: Abstract: A systematic investigation has been made of the physical and mechanical properties of dilute alloys of oxygen in high-purity iodide-refined zirconium. A marked strengthening effect was observed as a result of oxygen additions. Results of tensile tests at elevated temperatures up to 400°C are also presented. Preparation of alloys is discussed in detail.

Occurrence of the 4n + 1 Series in Nature

Description: "A small quantity of a Np-237, the long-lived ancestor of the 4n + 1 series, has been isolated from a natural source. The Th-229 content of the Th-230 obtained from Belgian Congo pitchblende concentrate and of Th-232 obtained from Brazilian monazite has been determined indirectly through isolation of the Ac-225 daughter. The mass ratio of Np-237 to U-238 in the Belgian Congo pitchblende concentrate has been determined as (1.8 +/- 0.4) x 10-(-12). The mass ratio of U-233 to U-238 in the same ore deposit is found to be (1.3 +/- 0.2) x 10-(-13). The ratio of the respective neutron-capture cross sections of U-238 in the ore body for the (n, 2n) and (n, gamma) reactions is calculated to be (1.3 +/- 0.6) x 10-(-3) on the basis of the relative Np-237 and Pu-239 contents."

Preliminary Investigation of Monochromatic X-ray Absorption as a Method of Analysis for Uranium

Description: Abstract: "Preliminary data have been taken to evaluate X-ray absorption at the L III edge of uranium as a method of detection of uranium in solution. Uranium concentrations in water from 150 ppm to 30,000 ppm have been investigated. The effect of copper as a typical contaminant in the range of 737 ppm of copper to 36,850 ppm of copper has been investigated for a representative uranium solution. Instrumentation has been constantly improved and suggestions for further improvements in amplifying and counting equipment are included. Comparison of experimental data with theory indicates that the derived equations are adequate."
