Description: The present thinking on high-energy e/sup /plus//e/sup /minus// linear colliders is reviewed, stressing those points that have consequences for detector design and physics analyses. Detector requirements are discussed. Two exercises in supersymmetry: a low-energy supergravity model and free string field theory

Description: The new features of a supersymmetric standard model in the presence of heavy families are studied. The minimal set of Higgs fields, the desert between the electroweak and the grand unification scale and perturbative values of the dimensionless parameters throughout this region are assumed. Recent experimental results on the beam-beam effects in storage rings and an attempt of their interpretation

Description: The latest available experimental results on the luminosity, the space charge parameters, and the beam blowup as functions of particle energy and beam current are reviewed. The comparison with the phenomenological diffusion theory is done and useful scaling laws are derived. Some implications for anti p p storage rings are discussed.

PSI radiative decays

Description: Inclusive and exclusive measurements of psi radiative decay are presented. The magnitude of hard inclusive radiative decay is comparable to the prediction f first order QCD, but the measured spectrum is considerably softer. In addition to measurements of radiative decays to the known pseudoscalar and tensor mesons, a sizable decay to a resonance of mass 1440/sub -15//sup +10/ MeV/c/sup 2/ in the K anti K..pi.. mode is observed. Total hadron cross section, new particles, and muon electron events in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at SPEAR

Description: The review of total hadron electroproduction cross sections, the new states, and the muon--electron events includes large amount of information on hadron structure, nine states with width ranging from 10's of keV to many MeV, the principal decay modes and quantum numbers of some of the states, and limits on charm particle production. 13 references. Two-photon interactions from Mark II at SPEAR

Description: Results on the two-photon production of the eta', f(1270), A/sub 2/(1310), and f'(1515) mesons at SPEAR energies are presented using data taken with the Mark II detector. The radiative width of the eta' has been determined to be GAMMA/sub ..gamma gamma../(eta') = 5.8 +- 1.1 keV (20% systematic uncertainty). Upper limits for the radiative widths of the f, A/sub 2/, and f' have been determined.

Fractional charge search

Description: A device to search for fractional charge in matter is described. The sample is coupled to a low-noise amplifier by a periodically varying capacitor and the resulting signal is synchronously detected. The varying capacitor is constructed as a rapidly spinning wheel. Samples of any material in volumes of up to 0.05 ml may be searched in less than an hour.

Theoretical understanding of charm decays

Description: A detailed description of charm decays has emerged. The various concepts involved are sketched. Although this description is quite successful in reproducing the data the chapter on heavy flavour decays is far from closed. Relevant questions like on th real strength of weak annihilation, Penguin operators, etc. are still unanswered. Important directions in future work, both on the experimental and theoretical side are identified.

Parity violation in polarized electron scattering

Description: The weak forces are responsible for the decay of radioactive nuclei, and it was in these decay processes where parity non-conservation was first observed. The electronics and data acquisition system for the Wire Imaging Synchrotron Radiation Detector at the SLC (Stanford Linear Collider)

Description: The Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center collides electrons and positrons produced in the linear accelerator pulse by pulse. We determine the energy of each beam by measuring the angle of deflection of the beam in the SLC extraction lines. Tracking with wire chambers at high luminosities

Description: Radiation damage and rate limitations impose severe constraints on wire chambers at the SSC. Possible conceptual designs for wire chamber tracking systems that satisfy these constraints are discussed. Computer simulation studies of tracking in such systems are presented. Simulations of events from interesting physics at the SSC, including hits from minimum bias background events, are examined. X-Y spacial distribution experiments with Parmela or, what I did on my summer vacation

Properties of leptons

Description: The properties of the electron, muon, tau, and their neutrinos are reviewed. Three discrepancies in our understanding of those properties are discussed: the lifetime of orthopositronium, the mass spectra of e{sup +}e{sup -} pairs produced in heavy ion collisions, and the 1-charged particle modes problem in tau decays. The review concludes with a discussion of what we need to learn about the tau and the consequent need for a tau-charm factory. 68 refs., 7 figs., 8 tabs.
