Creating a word list for technical and clerical personnel

Description: The Savannah River Plant and Laboratory employ more than 16,000 people. When the separate Publications Divisions of the Plant and Laboratory were combined it was determined that a single source of information for using terms was needed, and that the source would take the form of a word list. The Word List was issued to more than 5000 employees onsite. Liquid waste handling facilities for a conceptual LWR spent fuel reprocessing complex

Description: The waste evaporator systems and the methods for evaporating the liquid wastes of various radioactivity levels are discussed. Investigation of cooling coil corrosion in storage tanks for radioactive waste

Description: The high frequency of cooling coil leaks observed in high-heat waste storage tanks soon after sludge removal operations is attributed to pitting, according to laboratory corrosion studies. Experiments show that the most likely series of events leading to coil leakage is (1) excessive dilution of basic nitrite in the supernate, (2) initiation of attack in crevices due to oxygen depletion cells, and (3) acceleration of the attack by sulfate dissolved from the sludge. Initial evaluation of photographic data of F- and H-Area seepage basin outcrops

Description: Photographic data for the Savannah River Plant (SRP) were reviewed for 1961 through 1987 to determine the value of this photography in estimating the timing and extent of the F- and H-Area seepage basin outcrops along the upper Four Mile Creek floodplain. Light water reactor fuel reprocessing: dissolution studies of voloxidized fuel

Description: Voloxidation is a proposed head-end process to remove tritium from irradiated LWR fuel by roasting the fuel in the presence of oxygen. Remote reactor repair: GTA (gas tungsten Arc) weld cracking caused by entrapped helium

Description: A repair patch was welded to the wall of a nuclear reactor tank using remotely controlled thirty-foot long robot arms. Larvae and juveniles of the brook silverside, Labidesthes sicculus

Description: Protolarvae have 6 to 7 preanal and 29 to 31 postanal myomeres. Migration of the anus and pelvic buds during the metalarval phase results in 14 to 15 preanal and 24 to 25 postanal myomeres and causes a relative increase in prepelvic body length. Pectoral fins in protolarvae appear before finfold differentiation. Median fin ray development in mesolarvae appears sequentially in the caudal, anal, and soft dorsal fins, respectively. Improved reactivity monitor using a shuttling /sup 252/Cf source

Description: A technique for measuring reactivities of moderated arrays of nuclear fuels with a shuttling /sup 252/Cf source has been significantly extended and refined. Kinetics of the ambient temperature dissolution of plutonium metal in sulfamic acid

Description: The stoichiometry and the kinetics of the ambient temperature dissolution of alpha-phase plutonium in sulfamic acid has been determined. Hydrogen off-gas rates and plutonium concentrations were calculated as functions of time for a variety of dissolving conditions. Calculations show that nominal 2.2 kg Pu buttons (surface area, 171 cm/sup 2/) should yield solutions containing 60 +- 10 g Pu/L after a one-hour dissolving cycle. Description: The temperature dependence of nitrate stress corrosion in mild steel is given by activation energies of 27 kJ/mol for continuous and 56 kJ/mol for discontinuous crack growth. Trace elements in the terrestrial environment of a coal-fired powerhouse

Description: A coal-fired powerhouse at the Savannah River Plant, Aiken, South Carolina operated for more than 20 years without electrostatic precipitators and consumed about 360,000,000 kilograms of coal per year.
