Tests of a Vapor-Space Feed Nozzle for Calcining Aluminum Nitrate Solutions in a Fluidized Bed

Description: An investigation was conducted to determine the performance of a vapor- space feed nozzle which sprayed aluminum nitrate solution on the surface of a fluidized bed calciner. Results indicate that this type of feed system is satisfactory for calcining aqueous wastes from the processing of spent aluminum- type nuclear fueIs. Process and product control were achieved by adjusting the volumetric ratio of the air to the liquid fed to the nozzIe. The results obtained at various operating conditions a… more

Development of a Fluidized Bed Calcination Process for Aluminum Nitrate Wastes in a Two-Foot-Square Pilot Plant Calciner. Part I. Equipment Development and Initial Process Studies

Description: A two-foot-square fluidized bed calciner was designed and operated to convert aqueous, highly radioactive wastes into granular solids. The calciner exceeded its designed feed capacity of calcining, at a bed temperature of 400/sup 0/C, 100 liters per hour of aluminum nitrate solution simulating wastes from the reprocessing of spent aluminum-uranium alloy reactor fuel. Heat was supplied to the calciner by circulating NaK with an electromagnetic pump, at temperatures up to 1400/sup 0/F, through a … more

Low Temperature Polymorphic Transformations of Calcined Alumina

Description: The factors which affect the transformation of amorphous alumina to crystalline alumina in the temperature range 350 to 650/sup 0/C were studied. Amorphous alumina, with small amounts of added impurities, was heated in an atmosphere containing the oxides of nitrogen, air, and water vapor, and the amount of crystalline alumina was determined. Alpha alumina was the predominant crystalline form after heating amorphous alumina that was prepared in a fluid bed calciner. The effects of temperature, c… more

Determination of Hafnium and Rare Earths in Aluminum Alloys

Description: Procedures are described for both a titrimetric and a gravimetric determination of hafnium in aluminum -hafnium alloys. The gravimetric procedure is used if the hafnium is to be recovered; otherwise, the titrimetric procedure is preferred. The sample is dissolved in aqua regia. Any undissolved hafnium is taken into solution via pyrosulfate fusion. The hafnium is separated from the aluminum and contaminants in the aluminum by precipitation as the mandelate. In the gravimetric procedure the hafni… more

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS IN AQUEOUS REPROCESSING PLANT OPERATIONS

Description: Safety precautions utilized for control and cominement of fissionable and radioactive materials in the various aqueous reprocessing operations performed at the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant are presented. Three primary nuclear safety controls, geometrical, mass limitation, and concentration control, are used. Operations are penformed according to standard operating procedures which are set up to prevent circumvention of the primary nuclear safety controls. The various processing operations wi… more
