Liquid-in-Glass Thermometer Calibration Service

Description: Abstract: This document gives a description of the calibration of liquid-in-glass thermometers at the National Bureau of Standards. The calibration equipment and procedures used at NBS are discussed in detail. Calculations and stem-temperature corrections are shown and a discussion of the sources of error encountered in calibration and estimates of uncertainties is presented.

Growth mechanisms and characterization of hydrogenated amorphous- silicon-alloy films

Description: This report describes an apparatus, constructed and tested, that allows measurement of the surface morphology of as-grown hydrogenated amorphous silicon films with atomic resolution using a scanning tunneling microscope. Surface topologies of 100-[degree][Lambda]-thick intrinsic films, deposited on atomically flat, crystalline Si and GaAs, are reported. Measurements of the {sup 235}U(n,f) cross section in the 3 to 30 MeV neutron energy region

Description: To improve the accuracy of the {sup 235}U(n,f) cross section, measurements have been made of this standard cross section at the target 4 facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The data were obtained at the 20-meter flight path of that facility. The fission reaction rate was determined with a fast parallel plate ionization chamber and the neutron fluence was measured with an annular proton recoil telescope. Measurements and Models for Hazardous Chemical and Mixed Wastes

Description: The mixture of toxic chemicals, heavy metals, halogenated solvents and radionuclides in many DOE waste materials presents a challenging problem for separating the different species and disposing of individual contaminants. Cryogenic Properties of Inorganic Insulation Materials for ITER Magnets: A Review

Description: Results of a literature search on the cryogenic properties of candidate inorganic insulators for the ITER TF magnets are reported. The materials investigated include: Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}, AlN, MgO, porcelain, SiO{sub 2}, MgAl{sub 2}O{sub 4}, ZrO{sub 2}, and mica. A graphical presentation is given of mechanical, elastic, electrical, and thermal properties between 4 and 300 K. A companion report reviews the low temperature irradiation resistance of these materials.

Determination of Atomic Data Pertinent to the Fusion Energy Program

Description: We summarize progress that has been made on the determination of atomic data pertinent to the fusion energy program. Work is reported on the identification of spectral lines of impurity ions, spectroscopic data assessment and compilations, expansion and upgrade of the NIST atomic databases, collision and spectroscopy experiments with highly charged ions on EBIT, and atomic structure calculations and modeling of plasma spectra.
