Fast Neutron Interactions with Li⁶ and Li⁷

Description: Abstract: "Measurements have been made of the cross sections for the reactions Id-6(n, dn)He-4 and Li-7(n, tn)He-4 over an incident neutron energy range of 5 - 14 MeV. The energy and angular distributions of all reaction products were determined."

Radiation Shielding for Test Cell "C"

Description: "This report contains information on the following topics related to the radiation shielding at test cell "C". (1) Calculation of wall and roof thicknesses. (2) Calculation of radiation heating of front wall by gamma and neutron absorption. (3) Calculation of neutron activation in front face of test cell. (4) Calculation of γ-dose rates both direct and behind shadow shields at various distances. (5) Dose produced by a reactor catastrophe."

Radioactive Decontamination Tests on Surgeon's Gloves Contaminated With Plutonium

Description: Report discussing the effectiveness of various methods for removing plutonium from contaminated gloves. The cost of decontaminating the gloves using the most effective method was three times the cost of new gloves, and "consumer resistance" was noted among users of treated gloves.

Leakage Neutron Spectrum of U²³³ Critical Assembly

Description: Abstract: "The leakage neutron spectrum of a U²³³ spherical critical assembly (Jezebel) has been measured using nuclear emulsions as radiator and detector. The spectrum obtained is compared with similar measurements on the U-235 and Pu-239 analogues of Jezebel U²³³; it is found to agree closely with that of the Pu-239 assembly and to be harder than that of the U-235 assembly. All three spectra are compared with theoretical spectra obtained from a numerical approximation to the neutron transport equation."

Preliminary Investigation of a Five-Crystal Scintillation Gamma-Ray Spectrometer

Description: Abstract: A five-crystal scintillation gamma-ray spectrometer was constructed for use as a Compton coincidence spectrometer or as a pair coincidence spectrometer. Preliminary tests are discussed. The efficiency in either mode of operation was found to be low; however, the backgrounds were favorable and good definition of characteristic lines was achieved...Future tests and plans for improvements are discussed."

Equations Representing Reactor System with Emphasis on KIB Digital Program

Description: "This report is written as a supplement to LAMS 2539. It is hoped that one will be able to read LAMS 2539, with emphasis on the fourth part (Memorandum N-4-79OU by 0. Farmer), with this memorandum to bridge the gaps and understand more about the model used and what the KIB Program can be used for. The system is defined by subsystems or subprograms: Thrust System, Heat Exchanger, Neutron Dynamics, Rod Actuator Dynamics, and Thermocouple Dynamics. The original Kiwi-B Flow System is included in the first part of LAMS 2539. This has been replaced by the newer system which includes a turbo-pump (per R, Bohl & E. Wheatley). This system will not be included here. Recommendations are made for improvement and more work in certain areas."

A calculation to simulate the underground Bernalillo shot

Description: From abstract: "Detailed calculations were undertaken in an attempt to explain some post-shot observations of the underground Bernalillo shot. A procedure was developed to calculate with a one-space dimensional code both the flow of energy up and down the hole and the energy loss into the walls of the hole."

Pressure Balance in a Toroidal Pinch

Description: Abstract: In the study of a linear pinch, use of the equation of pressure balance has proven to be a powerful method of analyzing data taken with a magnetic probe. The toroidal pinch, however, is a geometrically more complicated object, and the use of the pressure balance equations is not so clean cut. It is the object of this note to analyze the pressure balance equations for a torus to the point where they might prove useful in interpreting probe data.

The Rolling of Gold Sheet for LAPRE 2 Pressure Liner

Description: From abstract: "This report discusses a special handling procedure devised to prevent contamination of high-purity gold while processing the metal from cast billet to final sheet. Gold of 99.99% purity was cast into rectangular billets and rolled into sheet whose final dimensions were 48 by 12-1/2 by 0.015 inch...As a final step, the sheet was annealed dead-soft in preparation for subsequent forming operations."

Some Reactor Physics in the Rover Project

Description: From abstract: "A general and systematic development of reactor computing methods and detailed application given in Report LAMS-2255 separately is supplemented in this report for a few specific systems of interest to the Rover program. Neutron cross sections, reactor description, and computed results are given for a reactor required to have a constant (radially) power distribution at high temperatures."

A Monte Carlo Calculation of the Neutron Detection Efficiency of a Hydrogen Bubble Chamber

Description: Abstract: "The calculation of the efficiency of the Los Alamos hydrogen bubble chamber for detection of neutrons in the energy range 5 to 35 MeV has been done using a "Monte Carlo" technique. The detection efficiency is calculated as a function of energy of the neutron and angle of the proton recoil."

On the Possibility of Extracting Energy from Gravitational Systems by Navigating Space Vehicles

Description: This report describes a number of problems, generally involving the possibility of using reserved kinetic energy in such a way as to acquire, by suitable near collisions with one or the other of the celestial bodies discussed, much more kinetic energy that it possesses -- more by an order of magnitude than the available reserve energy would allow it to acquire by itself.
