Separation of Iron and Cobalt on Synthetic Resin

Description: In the separation of mixtures of radioactive iron and cobalt from neutron irradiated targets and in the removal of iron from cobalt targets for cyclotron production of radioiron, it is desirable to have a method superior to extraction from isopropyl ether in efficiency and ease of manipulation. Recent studies by Moore and Kraus on the separation of cobalt and nickel and on the behavior of iron in hydrochloric acid on Dowex-l resin in relation to the selective adsorption of chloride complexes of… more

[Berkeley Isotope Chart]

Description: Chart classifying the nuclear properties of known elements. The classification and type of radiation of each isotope is identified with abbreviations indicating the half life the isotopes. The elements are organized by atomic number into vertical columns. For each element, the isotopes are organized according to their mass, with the lighter isotopes at the lower end and heavier isotopes at the upper end of the column.

Range-Energy Tables

Description: The tables and graphs of this publication are essentially an expansion of the 'Range-Energy Curves' of Aron, Hoffman, and Williams (AECU-663). The original work of Aron et al is extended to include pions, protons, deuterons, tritons, and He{sup 3} particles in selected absorber elements and in some compounds that are useful either as target materials or as scintillating materials. This extension is an outgrowth of needs that arose during the course of certain experiments that have been carried … more

Recent Total Neutron Yield Measurements

Description: The report summarizes results obtained since September, 1951, by total neutron yield experiments using 190 Mev deuterons and the MnSo4 tank method (UCRL-1375 and UCRL-1480). A new method of beam monitoring has resulted in establishing firmly the absolute yield for solid uranium and thorium primary targets backed by a solid uranium secondary. The beam monitoring was done by using a primary target built into a faraday cup. This method circumvents errors caused by recombination in the ionizatio… more

A High Vacuum High Speed Ion Pump

Description: A vacuum pump based on the properties of a magnetically collimated electric discharge is described. It has a speed in the range 3000 to 7000 liters a second and a base pressure in the order of 10{sup-6}mm.

Ozone and Nitrogen Oxide Production by Irradiation of Air

Description: In regard to the production of ozone and various nitrogen oxides in air by action of x-rays or gamma rays, thre seems to be no direct experimental data which can be used. There is some data on the action of alpha particles on air and some on the action of cathode rays.
