Diffusion Entropy vs. Multiscale and Rényi Entropy to Detect Progression of Autonomic Neuropathy

Description: This article reviews the literature to argue the importance of the occurrence of crucial events in the dynamics of physiological processes. Crucial events are interpreted as short time intervals of turbulence, and the time distance between two consecutive crucial events is a waiting time distribution density with an inverse power law (IPL) index µ, with µ < 3 generating non-stationary behavior.

Measuring flexibility: A text-mining approach

Description: Article describes how, in creativity research, ideational flexibility, the ability to generate ideas by shifting between concepts, has long been the focus of investigation. Here, the authors build from extant research to theoretically posit, and then empirically validate, a text-mining based method for measuring flexibility in verbal divergent thinking (DT) responses.

Topological View of Flows Inside the BOLD Spontaneous Activity of the Human Brain

Description: Article describes study which found that persistent, recurring blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signals in triangulated rs-fMRI videoframes display previously undetected topological findings, i.e., vortex structures that cover brain activated regions.

Thermal Stress Has Minimal Effects on Bacterial Communities of Thermotolerant Symbiodinium Cultures

Description: Article comparing the microbial communities of three isolates from different species of the genus Symbiodinium (formerly known as Symbiodinium clade A) with different ecophysiology, levels of interaction with the animal host, and thermal adaptations. Results suggest that bacteria associated or co-cultured with thermotolerant Symbiodinium might play an important role in thermotolerance.

Not so bad: avoidance and aversive discounting modulate threat appraisal in anterior cingulate and medial prefrontal cortex

Description: This article describes an investigation in which 30 healthy adults underwent functional neuroimaging while completing an avoidance task in which responses to an Avoidable CS+ threat prevented delivery of an aversive stimulus, but not to an Unavoidable CS+ threat.

N-acylethanolamide metabolizing enzymes are upregulated in human neural progenitor-derived neurons exposed to sub-lethal oxidative stress

Description: Article is a study determining whether ReN cells, a superior cell model system for studying neurodevelopment, differentiation, and neuroprotection, express proteins involved in canonical eCB NAE signaling and whether oxidative stress can induce their expression. This study is a first step toward determining how oxidative stress affects CB1, CB2, FAAH, NAAA, and NAPE-PLD expression and their potential defense against oxidative stress.

A neurobiology of learning beyond the declarative non-declarative distinction

Description: This article provides a literature review examining declarative and non-declarative forms of learning in neuroscience and psychology. The authors conclude that traditional taxonomy that distinguishes between neural systems supporting declarative and non-declarative forms of learning may be inadequate, as experimental and theoretical work suggests that other criteria may be more useful in categorizing the role of neural structures involved in learning such as the hippocampus and the basal gangli… more

Timescales of learning in the basal ganglia and the hippocampus

Description: This article is a commentary on "A role for the medial temporal lobe in feedback-driven learning: evidence from amnesia" by Foerde, K., Race, E., Verfaellie, M.,and Shohamy, D. (2013). It covers the idea that environmental feedback plays an important role with respect to both basal ganglia and hippocampus based learning. Evidence that both the hippocampus and the striatum are involved in reinforcement learning is given. This article suggests that future research use a more precise measurement o… more

Comparing Methods of Defining Priority Areas for Greater Sage-Grouse

Description: Article comparing priority areas for wildlife species using different methods and data types. The authors used resource selection function (RSF) models to predict high priority areas and compared this to priority areas developed using two alternative methods: (1) modified conservation buffer, and (2) utilization distribution (UD) models.
