Study of the proton pairing vibrations as an example of elementary nuclear modes. [Z = 40, 50, 82]

Description: A study of the proton pairing vibrations as an example of elementary nuclear modes is discussed. The (/sup 3/He,n) reaction has been used to study 0/sup +/ proton pair vibration modes for nuclei at Z = 40, 50 and 82. Evidence is presented that Z = 38 is a better shell closure than Z = 40 but not at all perfect. For Z = 50 and 82 correction must be made for the substantial particle hole interaction to obtain agreement with the pairing vibration model. The interaction with neutron pairing quanta … more

University of Colorado, Nuclear Physics Laboratory technical progress report, November 1, 1978-October 31, 1979. Report NPL-845. [Nuclear Physics Lab. , Univ. of Colorado]

Description: This report summarizes work carried out at the Nuclear Physics Laboratory of the University of Colorado from November 1, 1978 to October 31, 1979, under contract EY-76-C-02-0535.A003 between the University of Colorado and the United States Department of Energy. Experimental studies of light ion-induced reactions were performed with the AVF cyclotron, which continues each year to produce beams of yet higher quality. Charged-particle studies continued to emphasize use of the high-resolution spect… more

Critical phenomena in thick films of a binary liquid mixture

Description: The first experimental data on the behavior of a critical system as it approaches two dimensionality are presented. Measurements of the bulk coexistence curve by use of refractive index techniques were done on the binary fluid mixture methanol--cyclohexane. These measurements gave the critical exponent ..beta.. = 0.326 +- 0.003, which agrees with recent Ising-model calculations. This same binary fluid mixture was then constrained between two highly reflective, optically flat pieces of fused sil… more

Brownian motion of interacting particles

Description: Guided by the descriptions which are used to describe noninteracting particles, it is argued that the generalized Smoluchowski equation, including the hydrodynamic interaction and corrections for ion cloud effects may be used to describe interacting particles for the temporal and spatial regimes probed by light beating spectroscopy. This equation is then used to find cumulants of decay of the intermediate scattering function. The generalized Smoluchowski equation is reduced to a simple diffusio… more

Technical progress report and proposal for continuation of contract

Description: A considerable amount of experimental work was done on the importance of two-step mechanisms in nuclear reactions. The medium-energy experimental group participated in construction of the EPICS facility at LAMPF. The theoretical program concentrated on investigations of $pi$--nucleus interactions and finite- range effects. The report is arranged as follows: experimental program (nuclear physics, intermediate energy physics, apparatus and facility development, cyclotron operation, outside users … more

Critical scattering of laser light by thin fluid films. Progress report

Description: A novel close-spaced Fabry-Perot interferometer has been developed that contains the fluid under study between the mirrors. The interferometer-cell has been used to make the first successful measurement of the anomalous refractive index of a binary fluid mixture near its consolute critical point. The cell has also been used to determine the coexistence curve for a binary mixture and the associated critical index BETA . Intensity autocorrelation spectroscopy of laser light scattered from Brownia… more

Nuclear Physics Laboratory technical progress report, November 1, 1972-- November 1, 1973

Description: The experimental program was divided into the areas of nuclear physics (charged-particle experiments, gamma-ray experiments andd beta decay, neutron time-of-flight experiments, x-ray fluorescence analysis, other activities), intermediate enengy physics, and apparatus and facility development. The energy- loss spectrograph, rotating-beam neutron time-of-flight spectrometer, and cyclotron and the rearch done using these facilities are described. The theoretical program has concentrated on the eff… more

Polarized and depolarized light-scattering studies on Brownian diffusional and critical fluid systems: theory and experiment

Description: An effort to expand light-scattering autocorrelation techniques to Brownian diffusional and critical fluid systems in which multiple scattering effects are important, and to understand the observed similarity of the Rayleigh linewidth of light scattered from these two seemingly different systems is discussed. A formalism was developed to find the light field multiply scattered from a suspension of Brownian diffusing particles. For the field doubly scattered from a system of noninteracting Brown… more

Performance of the SLD Central Drift Chamber prototype

Description: A two-cell prototype of the SLD Central Drift Chamber has been tested using CO/sub 2/-isobutane (92%-8%) at one atmosphere. Average single wire resolution of 55 ..mu..m was achieved. Charge division tests indicate a resolution for the final design of less than or equal to 0.5% of wire length. dE/dx separation of ..pi../e should be useful up to at least 7 GeV/c. 100 MHz waveform digitizers were used in parallel with conventional timing and integration techniques. The results show equivalent perf… more
