Enthalpy measurement of coal-derived liquids. Quarterly technical progress report, July-September 1980

Description: Equipment modifications to a Freon 11 boil-off type calorimeter are described. The calorimetric system was used to measure the enthalpies of thiophene experimentally. Data were taken over a temperature range of 100/sup 0/F to 750/sup 0/F at pressures of 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 825.9 (the critical), 1000, and 1500 psia. Thermodynamic properties derived from the data are compared to values in the literature, and the agreement is exceptionally good. The data are then compared directly to results c… more

Utilization of shale oil as a feedstock for steam pyrolysis and petrochemical intermediate production. Quarterly technical progress report, June-August 1978

Description: During the past quarter, 5 runs were made on a number of hydrotreated samples including a mildly hydrotreated simulated in-situ (1.35% N) and two moderately hydrotreated Tosco II (0.82% N and 1.55% N) distillates. The results are, in general, consistent with previous results which indicated an increase in olefins yield as the severity of hydrogenation increased. The olefins yields for the simulated in-situ oil were greater than those for the Tosco II oil for oil hydrogenated to comparable sever… more

Role of spent shale in oil shale processing and the management of environmental residues. Final technical report, January 1979-May 1980

Description: The adsorption of hydrogen sulfide on retorted oil shale was studied at 10, 25, and 60/sup 0/C using a packed bed method. Equilibrium isotherms were calculated from the adsorption data and were modeled by the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Polanyi equations. The isosteric heat of adsorption was calculated at three adsorbent loadings and was found to increase with increased loading. A calculated heat of adsorption less than the heat of condensation indicated that the adsorption was primarily due to V… more

Process and analytical studies of enhanced low severity co-processing using selective coal pretreatment

Description: The findings in the first phase were as follows: 1. Both reductive (non-selective) alkylation and selective oxygen alkylation brought about an increase in liquefaction reactivity for both coals. 2. Selective oxygen alkylation is more effective in enhancing the reactivity of low rank coals. In the second phase of studies, the major findings were as follows: 1. Liquefaction reactivity increases with increasing level of alkylation for both hydroliquefaction and co-processing reaction conditions. 2… more

Development of Vanadium Phosphaate Catalysts for Methanol Production by Selective Oxidation of Methane.

Description: This DOE sponsored study of methane partial oxidation was initiated at Amax Research and Development in Golden, CO in October of 1993. Shortly thereafter the management of Amax closed this R&D facility and the PI moved to the Colorado School of Mines. The project was begun again after contract transfer via a novation agreement. Experimental work began with testing of vandyl pyrophosphate (VPO), a well known alkane selective oxidation catalyst. It was found that VPO was not a selective catalyst … more
