Crop residues as a fuel for power generation

Description: Crop residues could serve as an alternative energy source for producing electric power and heat in agricultural regions of the United States. Nearly 2 quads of residues are estimated to be available as a sustainable annual yield. These can substitute for up to one quad of conventional fuels used to generate electricity and up to an additional quad of petroleum and natural gas currently used for producing heat. Flash hydropyrolysis of coal. Quarterly report No. 2, April 1--June 30, 1977

Description: With the combination of low hydrogen to coal ratio, high coal feed rate and larger total quantity of coal fed, considerable liquid product is being condensed and collected. Experimental runs conducted at 750/sup 0/C and 800/sup 0/C at pressures up to 3000 psi of hydrogen show overall hydrocarbon yields and particularly gaseous hydrocarbon yields to increase with pressure to approximately 60 percent at 3000 psi. Description: Mixtures of Ar and Xe have been studied in most of the submonolayer region of the phase diagram (T,chi,rho), T = temperature, chi = chemical composition, rho = fraction of a monolayer. Structural study of multilayered vanadium/nickel superlattices

Description: We have studied the microstructure of V/Ni metallic superlattice, using x-ray and neutron diffraction. We find a sharp and broad rocking curves around the first-order Bragg peak, and attribute them to a columnar structure which gives rise to two modulation structures; one the ordinary layered structure within the columns and the other the averaged modulation structure which produces the sharp rocking peak.

Description: Subsurface waters at Maxey Flats are anoxic systems with high alkalinity and high concentrations of dissolved ferrous ion. Americium and cobalt in these trench waters are made more soluble by the presence of EDTA, while strontium and cesium are unaffected under the same conditions. Effect of reduced boiler water temperature on cycle efficiency

Description: Tests were performed on a ''typical'' residential hot water boiler to evaluate the energy saving potential of reduced boiler water temperature. A significant reduction of annual fuel consumption was determined based on detailed efficiency measurements combined with the BNL Seasonal Performance Evaluation Computational Program. The energy saving has been attributed to reduced off-cycle heat losses resulting from the lower boiler operating temperature.

Non-equilibrium aspects of water reactor safety

Description: A critical review of the thermal non-equilibrium phase change models applicable to the water reactor safety calculations is presented. Properties of jets in high-E/sub T/ events produced in pp collisions at. sqrt. s = 63 GeV

Description: The properties of jets in high-E/sub tau/ events produced in pp collisions at ..sqrt..s = 63 GeV have been studied at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The fragmentation of the jets is found to be similar to that of jets produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation. The jets are wider than calculated from a constituent scattering model with no hard bremsstrahlung component. Clearance of Tc-99m DTPA Aerosol from Coal Miners' Lungs

Description: Alterations in regional epithelial permeability were assessed in 22 retired West Virginia coal miners' lungs by measuring the clearance of inhaled 0.5-..mu..m Tc-99m DTPA aerosol. Activity was measured in both lungs and in regions of interest placed over the lung periphery in the apical, middle, and basal portions of each lung. Numerical method for solving elliptic boundary value problems in unbounded domains

Description: A numerical method for solving elliptic boundary value problems in unbounded domains is described. An artificial boundary near infinity, say a sphere GAMMA/sub R/ of large radius R, and an approximate local boundary condition on GAMMA/sub R/ are introduced.
