The Decontamination of Uranium from Fission Products by the Use of the Uranyl Oxalate Precipitation Reaction

Description: Abstract: "Decontamination factors of the order of 10-4 were obtained for Beta and Gamma emitters present as fission products when uranium was precipitated from 50 mC activity level solutions as uranyl oxalate under normal uranium yield conditions for three cycles (~60%). Factors of the order of 10-3 were obtained by the use of this reaction with similar solutions under relatively high uranium yield conditions for three cycles (~90%). The uranium peroxide precipitation reaction proved to be of … more

A Magnetically Controlled Quartz Fiber Microbalance

Description: Abstract: "The design, simplified techniques of construction, and uses of an electromagnetically controlled quartz fiber microbalances are described. The balance is capable of weighing directly an unbalanced load as large as 1.2 milligrams, carrying a counter-balanced load of 100 to 150 milligrams, and giving a sensitivity of 0.1 microgram per 6 minutes of arc. The one-piece all-quartz balance unit fits into a 25 millimeter diameter tube 12 centimeters long. The balance may be used under wide c… more

Creep-Rupture Tests of Beryllium

Description: "A program of creep-rupture tests of several bars of Beryllium has been completed. The tests were made at 1200, 1400, 1550, and 1700 F. in protective atmospheres of tank helium or hydrogen. The results are given in a summary table and by creep and design curves. A description of the test set-up is included."

A Study of Equilibrium Phases in the System UO₂ - ZrO₂

Description: Report discussing phase equilibrium studies on the UO₂ - ZrO₂ system, which was found to primarily consist of two solid solutions separated by a two phase region which shrinks as temperature rises. These studies were completed to understand UO₂ and ZrO₂ high temperature reactions and temperature limitations.

The Effect of Reactor Irradiation on the Stress Strain Curve of Copper

Description: The following report describes the method of a crystal of 99.99% pure copper grown under high vacuum and cut into two specimens used to test the effects of reactor irradiation on copper. Provided is a map of the results that show the difference between the unirradiated and irradiated copper samples through the process of stress strain.

Modification in the Peroxide-Colorimetric Method for Uranium Developed at the MIT Mineral Engineering Laboratory

Description: The following report describes the use of a peroxide-colorimetric method for the determination of uranium in ores and ore products containing as little as 0.001 per cent U3O8 that was used at MIT from April, 1947, to September, 1948.

Heat and Free Energy of the Neptunium (IV)-(V) Couple in Perchloric Acid

Description: Abstract: "The potential of the Np(IV)-Np(V) couple is not directly measurement since the couple does not establish reversible equilibrium at an inert electrode. Reproducible potential measurements were obtainable, however, in solutions containing Np(IV), Np(V), Pe(II), and Pe(III) ions in oxidation-reduction equilibrium. The expected fourth power hydrogen ion dependence of the Np(IV)-Np(V) couple was confirmed over the range 0.25-1.0 molar perchloric acid concentration. The heat of the reactio… more

The Determination of Zirconium

Description: Abstract: "The method of Hayes and Jones, which uses p-dimethylaminoasophenylarsonic acid to precipitate zirconium, was studied for the range of one to seven micrograms of zirconium. The most strongly interfering ions, namely phosphate, fluoride, sulfate and the tetravalent cations of uranium, thorium and plutonium were studied. Two procedures are suggested."

The Development and Application of Capillary Absorption Cells

Description: Abstract: "Various types of capillary absorption cells have been constructed from a variety of materials. These cells, having volumes as low as 160 microliters, have been used to increase the sensitivity of several colorimetrics methods as much as 1000 fold without appreciable loss of accuracy. Small volumes of solution must be used in order to concentrate the colored material present."

Feasibility Study of a Neutron Flux Bolometer

Description: Abstract: "A small low impedance flux monitoring device has been built which utilizes the heating (and consequent chance in resistance) of a boron coated platinum wire. Feasibility tests in the Argonne-GP-3 reactor indicate that it may develop into a wide range instrument, particularly useful at high flux levels. Design and constructional details of the bolometer and its associated circuits are given. The circuitry is somewhat unique since it is in effect an all electronic self-balancing bridge… more

Radium-Barium Separation Process: Part 2 - Chromate Fractionation Procedures

Description: Abstract: A comprehensive study was made of various fractionation systems for the fractional separation of barium-radium mixtures. The most efficient and simplest fractionation scheme was chosen on the basis of the thermodynamics of separating the constituents of mixed crystals and of the combining fractions in a system of repeating composition. This scheme was applied to the separation of barium and radium by utilizing the countercurrent batch fractionation of the chromates. The chromate proce… more

Determination of half life of polonium-210 by counting: final report

Description: Introduction: "A number of determination have been made of the half life of polonium-210 by calorimetry. Counting affords an entirely different method of determining half lives and requires only a small amount of activity. Therefore for comparison a half-life determination by counting was undertaken with a sample of approximately 0.5 millicurie of polonium."

Analysis of Lid Tank Neutron Data for Lead and Iron

Description: Abstract: An analysis of the lid tank neutron data for Pb-H2O and Fe-H2O is made. "Effective" fast neutron cross sections for the metals are obtained. This is based on the "one collision theory" of shielding. Values are 3.4 barns for Pb and 2.0 barns for Fe. These compare very well with those obtained by Albert and Welton based on other lid tank data and another method of calculation.
