Fundamental quantitative analysis of microbial activity in aquifer bioreclamation

Description: Research continued on aquifer bioreclamation. The project has four primary areas: (1) biodegradation of poorly soluble organic contaminants, (2) dual-limitation kinetics of electron donors and acceptors, (3) two-dimensional modeling of biofilm reactions in nonhomogeneous porous media, and (4) biologically induced clogging in porous media. For each area, this report gives a brief summary of the first year's progress, report this quarter's progress in detail, and indicate plans for future work. 2… more

Fundamental spectroscopic studies of carbenes and hydrocarbon radicals

Description: Determination of bond dissociation energies and heats of formation of hydrocarbon radicals and carbenes requires knowledge of their structures, but this is not provided by standard mass spectrometric studies; what is needed is high-resolution spectroscopy, often best achieved at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths. Nearly 60 reactive organic molecules were investigated in the period from 1988--1998.

Fundamental studies of reactive intermediates in homogeneous catalysis

Description: The studies involve dissociation of Fe(CO){sub n}{sup {minus}}, Ni(CO){sub n}{sub {minus}}, and other carbonyl anions; decarboxylation of (CO){sub 4}FeCOOH{sup {minus}} to form CO{sub 2} and (CO){sub 4}FeH{sup {minus}} in the water gas shift reaction; gas-phase bimolecular reactions of carbonyl anions and O{sub 2}; reaction of O{sub 2} with CpMn(CO){sub 2}{sup {minus}}; gas-phase chemistry of fullerene anions; and gas-phase thermochemistry of bicarbonate ion, bisulfite ion, and their conjugate … more

Fundamental studies of reactive intermediates in homogeneous catalysis. Final technical report

Description: The chief aims during the contract period were to design, construct and implement a new flowing afterglow-guided ion beam instrument for use in determining thermochemical properties of organometallic species pertinent to homogeneous catalysis, and to develop an electrospray ionization (ESI) source for the flowing afterglow-triple quadrupole apparatus for use in real-time analysis of reactive intermediates in catalytically active solutions. Both goals were achieved. In parallel with development … more

Fundamental Study of Black Liquor Gasification Kinetics. Quarterly progress report for the period October 1999 to December 1999

Description: The overall objective of this research is to evaluate the kinetics of gasification of kraft black liquor under laboratory conditions simulating pressurized, oxygen-blown gasification. The significant independent variables are gasifier temperature, black liquor composition particle size, and particle residence time. The authors will quantify their impact on the concentration of major and trace gas phase species, as well as the composition of condensed phase inorganic products, including specific… more

Fundamental Study of Black Liquor Gasification Kinetics Using a Pressurized Entrained-Flow Reactor (PEFR). Quarterly Progress Report for the Period July 1999 to September 1999

Description: The goal of the program is to identify the optimal operating window for black liquor gasification. The goals during this year are to prepare the PEFR for operation, conduct a series of preliminary screening tests to bracket BLG operating conditions, and develop a process model that can guide identification of the optimal operating window.

Funding Solar Projects at Federal Agencies: Mechanisms and Selection Criteria (Brochure)

Description: Implementing solar energy projects at federal facilities is a process. The project planning phase of the process includes determining goals, building a team, determining site feasibility and selecting the appropriate project funding tool. This fact sheet gives practical guidance to assist decision-makers with understanding and selecting the funding tool that would best address their site goals. Because project funding tools are complex, federal agencies should seek project assistance before mak… more
