Superconductivity in Filamentary Eutectic Composites. Progress Report, June 1, 1980-May 31, 1981

Description: The ac magnetic susceptibility of the Nb-Th eutectic composites in a dc magnetic field showed the existence of a mixed state in the thorium matrix material even in large fields of several kilogauss. This mixed state persisted until nearly the field at which superconductivity in the niobium filaments was destroyed. Measurements of the upper critical field H/sub c2 parallel/ were independent of filament diameter (from less than or equal to 100A to greater than or equal to 1000A) and showed less a… more

Dense ceramic membranes for hydrogen separation.

Description: We have developed cermet membranes that nongalvanically separate hydrogen from gas mixtures. The highest measured hydrogen flux was 20.0 cm{sup 3} (STP)/min-cm{sup 2} for an ANL-3a membrane at 900 C. For ANL-3 membranes with thickness of 40-500 {micro}m, hydrogen permeation is limited by the bulk diffusion of hydrogen through the metal phase. The effect of hydrogen partial pressure on permeation rate confirmed this conclusion, suggesting that higher permeation rates may be obtained by decreasin… more

STABILZATION OF NEOCLASSICAL TEARING MODES BY LOCALIZED ECCD IN DIII-D

Description: Neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs) are MHD modes which can become destabilized in a tokamak by a helical pressure perturbation. The NTM is particularly well suited to control since the mode is linearly stable although nonlinearly unstable, so if the island amplitude can be decreased below a threshold size the mode will decay and vanish. One means of shrinking the island is the replacement of the ''missing'' bootstrap current by a localized current generated by electron cyclotron current drive (E… more

ANALYSIS OF THE LEACHING EFFICIENCY OF INHIBITED WATER AND TANK SIMULANT IN REMOVING RESIDUES ON THERMOWELL PIPES

Description: A key component for the accelerated implementation and operation of the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) is the recovery of Tank 48H. Tank 48H is a type IIIA tank with a maximum capacity of 1.3 million gallons. Video inspection of the tank showed that a film of solid material adhered to the tank internal walls and structures between 69 inch and 150 inch levels. From the video inspection, the solid film thickness was estimated to be 1mm, which corresponds to {approx}33 kg of TPB salts (as 2… more

Improved MCFC performance with Li/Na/Ba/Ca carbonate electrolyte.

Description: Earlier electrolyte segregation tests of Li/Na carbonate used chemical analysis such as inductively coupled plasma/atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP/AES) of matrix strips wetted with carbonate and exposed to 5- to 20-V potential gradients. A segregation factor was correlated to the Li/Na carbonate composition. While fairly substantial segregation occurs at the eutectic composition of 52% Li, it is minimal at 60% to 75% Li. Such lithium-rich Li/Na carbonates may not be practical because the melt… more

Hydrothermal growth kinetics of Np(IV) oxide

Description: Toulouse, France All previous knowledge leading to this estimate is of NpO2(c) is indirect, based on thermodynamic cycles. The phase itself has heretofore not been observed as a precipitate from aqueous solution. Recent attempts (e.g., Nitsche et al., 1993; Efurd et al., 1996) to establish solubility controls on Np in oxidizing groundwaters (including J-13 groundwater) starting from high concentrations (i.e., supersaturation) have shown the formation of one or both of two Np(V) phases, NaNpO2CO… more

Choice of Proton Driver Parameters for a Neutrino Factory

Description: We discuss criteria for designing an optimal 'green field' proton driver for a neutrino factory. The driver parameters are determined by considerations of space charge, power capabilities of the target, beam loading and available RF peak power. A neutrino factory may be the best experimental tool to unravel the physics involved in neutrino oscillation and CP violation phenomena [1]. To have sufficient neutrino flux for acceptable physics results within 5 years requires about 10{sup 22} protons … more

Capsule design for the National Ignition Facility

Description: Several choices exist in the design and production of capsules intended to ignite and propagate fusion burn of the DT fuel when imploded by indirect drive at the National Ignition Facility. These choices include ablator material, ablator dopant concentration and distribution, capsule dimensions, and x-ray drive profile (shock timings and strengths). The choice of ablator material must also include fabrication and material characteristics, such as attainable surface finishes, permeability, stren… more

Emission of. gamma. rays from various materials pulsed with 14-MeV neutrons

Description: We have performed a number of experiments at LLNL recently to investigate the leakage of gamma rays from spheres of selected materials pulsed centrally with 14-MeV neutrons. Such spectral information may be carefully compared to calculational results to validate the transport models, particularly the nuclear cross section data base. In the present case, the TART code and SANDYL codes are used to explicitly calculate the observable, the recoil electron spectrum. The materials studied were H/sub … more

Kinetics of. beta. -particle-induced exchange between H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ at 298 K

Description: A quadrupole mass filter system was constructed in order to measure the equilibrium constants and rates of reaction of the ..beta..-particle-induced exchanges between H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ at cryogenic temperatures. Even with careful calibration experiments at 298 K, we could not completely remove the mass discrimination inherent in our method. We estimate the accuracy of our room-temperature mixture analyses to be +-2.2% in the D/sub 2/-DT-T/sub 2/ system, and +-9% in the H/sub 2/-H… more
