Results of Preliminary Drilling, Red Rock, Arizona

Description: Abstract: Structure drilling under Contract No. AT(05-l)-120 was begun May 13, 1951, and was suspended June 30, 1951, at Red Rock, Arizona with the completion of 12 holes and 2,390.5 feet of drilling. No mineralization was disclosed in the widely spaced holes. The structure and rock composition was found favorable for a potential drilling area.

Fabrication of a Set of Realistic Torso Phantoms for Calibration of Transuranic Nuclide Lung Counting Facilities

Description: A set of 16 tissue equivalent torso phantoms has been fabricated for use by major laboratories involved in counting transuranic nuclides in the lung. These phantoms, which have bone equivalent plastic rib cages, duplicate the performance of the DOE Realistic Phantom set. The new phantoms (and their successors) provide the user laboratories with a highly realistic calibration tool. Development of Forging Techniques for Uranium

Description: Uranium has been successfully forged using a Lobdell-Nazel forging hammer and a forging temperature range of 500 to 650 degrees centigrade. Using standard forging techniques, the metal readily flowed at the temperature chosen. A noticeable increase in tensile strength, yield strength and percent elongation was obtained in forged metal as compared with cast metal. Mask inspection microscopy with 13.2 nm table-top laser illumination

Description: We report the demonstration of a reflection microscope that operates at 13.2-nm wavelength with a spatial resolution of 55 {+-} 3 nm. The microscope uses illumination from a table-top EUV laser to acquire aerial images of photolithography masks with a 20 second exposure time. The modulation transfer function of the optical system was characterized.

Measurement of two-component flow using ultrasonic flowmeters

Description: Calibration of transit-time and Doppler ultrasonic flowmeters under two-component flow conditions has been conducted on 400 mm (16-in.) pipe. Testing covered total flows of 0.19 to 1.89 m{sup 3}/s (3000 to 30,000 gpm) and void fractions up to 40%. Operation of a DC large aperture volume-production H sup minus source

Description: In testing a multicusp volume-production H{sup {minus}} ion source (20 cm diameter, 23 cm long), we optimized the gas pressure, the plasma electrode bias potential and the magnetic filter. At the optimum pressure of 9 mT, the H{sup {minus}} beam output increased linearly with discharge power. The maximum H{sup {minus}} beam, measured with a current transformer downstream of the accelerator, was 100 mA while using a 6.67 cm{sup 2} aperture. The Sort on Radioactive Waste Type model: A method to sort single-shell tanks into characteristic groups. Revision 2

Description: The SORWT model presents a methodology to group SSTs that is both simple to understand and logical in its assumptions and construction. The SORWT model has predicted the existence of 24 groups of SSTs ranging from 22 tanks per group to two tanks per group. These 24 groups encompass 133 tanks and 93% of the total waste contained in SSTs. Synchrotron radiation photoemission studies of core level excitation effects

Description: The recent availability of intense polarized radiation tunable over the range 20-150 eV enables several core levels to be excited. Several remarkable effects have recently been reported when core excitation thresholds have been reached. For example, an increase in yield of 50% was observed in GaSe at the Se 3d threshold (h omega approx. = 57 eV). Rapidity and species dependence of particle production at largetransverse momentum for d+Au collisions at psNN = 200 GeV

Description: We determine rapidity asymmetry in the production of charged pions, protons and anti-protons for large transverse momentum (p{sub T}) for d+Au collisions at {radical}s{sub NN} = 200 GeV. The rapidity asymmetry is defined as the ratio of particle yields at backward rapidity (Au beam direction or -ve rapidity) to those at forward rapidity (d beam direction or +ve rapidity).
