Examination of an enriched I and E fuel element failure (RM-218)

Description: An enriched I & E fuel element failed during irradiation under Production Test IP-109-AC in December, 1957. Radiometallurgical examination of this slug was requested by the IPD Process Analysis Operation. This report presents the results of the examination work.

Examination of selected ruptures from the 1956 KE outbreak

Description: An outbreak of ruptures occurred in the KE Reactor during September, 1956. Radiometallurgical examination of three of these ruptures was requested by the IPD Reactor Fuels Operation. Examination of a fourth rupture which occurred in December, 1956, was later included in the original request. This report presents the results of the requested examination work.

Impact of petroleum industry horizontal divestiture on the coal market. [Proposed for consideration by Congress]

Description: The US Congress has set forth proposals which would prohibit oil companies from acquiring coal companies or other non-petroleum energy resources. Some proposals would require oil companies to divest themselves of any such resources that they already hold. The first legislation was introduced on this topic in the 94th Congress and alternative proposals are under serious consideration at the current time. We have analyzed some major variants of these legislative propsals with a study of likely ec… more

Radiation Effects in Borides, Part I - Helium Release and Swelling in Irradiated Borides

Description: The principal objective of the work being reported was to irradiate a variety of borides in order to assess the relationship of crystal structure to helium retention and structural changes. A secondary objective was to compare the irradiation behavior of powders and dense solids. Another objective was to compare the behavior of borides with similar crystal structures but having metal atoms with vastly different absorption cross-sections, for example, zirconium and hafnium diborides.

Radiation Effects in Borides, Part II. Fission Sintering of Boride Powders

Description: During the post-irradiation examination of borides it was discovered that the samples which had been irradiated as powders had sintered into firmly bonded bodies. This radiation sintering occurred at temperatures hundreds of degrees below that required to produce similar interparticle bonding by the application of heat alone. , This report discusses the results of the postirradiation examination of some of these borides which were irradiated as powders and compares the results of our observatio… more

Environmental Testing of a B4C-Ni Prototype Control Rod

Description: Summary: A prototype control rod containing absorber plates made from an electro- deposited dispersion of boron carbide in nickel was tested in the VBWR. It was exposed to the reactor environment of 545 degree F boiling water and thermal neutron fluxes (perturbed) which ranged from 0.6 to 1.1 x 10/sup 13/ nv for 2236 hours over a period of six months. The maximum B/sup 10/ burnup achieved during the test period was 1.8 percent. After irradiation, the rod was examined. The results of the examina… more
