Evidence for weak electronic correlations in Fe-pnictides

Description: Using x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, charge dynamics at and near the Fe L edges is investigated in Fe pnictide materials, and contrasted to that measured in other Fe compounds. It is shown that the XAS and RIXS spectra for 122 and 1111 Fe pnictides are each qualitatively similar to Fe metal. Cluster diagonalization, multiplet, and density-functional calculations show that Coulomb correlations are much smaller than in the cuprates, highlighting the role of Fe metallici… more

Drop oscillation and mass transfer in alternating electric fields

Description: After the second annual progress report to DOE in July 1990, we continued the experimental work for another liquid system. The mathematical model was also improved to include secondary effects due to drop deformation and charge redistribution on the deformed drop surface. Originally, we planned to study a mass transfer process after the hydrodynamic modelling. Due to difficulty in measuring drop concentration during oscillations, we decided to study a heat transfer process instead. Using the an… more

Search for massive long lived particles in aluminum targets irradiated by 300 GeV and 400 GeV protons

Description: A directional gas Cherenkov counter, which employed six phototubes to sample Cherenkov light from single particles having a gamma greater than ~10 was used to achieve accidental rates of less than one per day if operated near targets with surface radiation levels of as high as 10/sup +3/ r/hr. The cosmic ray background measured by the apparatus was reduced to less than one per day by mounting our directional Cherenkov counter above the irradiated targets and facing toward the earth. Two searche… more

Analysis of the ATW fuel cycle using the REBUS-3 code system.

Description: Partitioning and transmutation strategies are under study in several countries as a means of reducing the long-term hazards of spent fuel and other high-level nuclear waste. Various reactor and accelerator-driven system concepts have been proposed to transmute the long-lived radioactive nuclei of waste into stable or short-lived species. Among these concepts, the accelerator-driven transmutation of waste (ATW) system has been proposed by LANL for rapid destruction of transuranic actinides and l… more

Assessment of the SE2-ANL code using EBR-II temperature measurements

Description: The SE2-ANL code is a modified version of the SUPERENERGY-2 code [1]. This code is used at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) to compute the core-wide temperature profiles in Liquid Metal Reactor (LMR) cores. The accuracy of this code has recently been tested by comparing the predicted temperatures with measured values in the Experimental Breeder Reactor R (EBR-II). The detailed temperature distributions in two experimental subassemblies and the mixed mean subassembly outlet temperatures were us… more

Effects of Pb and Bi cross sections on ATW subcriticality predictions.

Description: The accelerator-driven transmutation of waste (ATW) system has been proposed for transmuting the long-lived radioactive nuclei of high-level waste to stable or short-lived species. In recent ATW design concepts, lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE), consisting of 44.5% Pb and 55.5% Bi by weight is used as the spallation target, system coolant, and reflector. Because of the excellent neutron reflection properties of LBE, the subcriticality level of ATW is quite sensitive to the cross sections of lead and… more

Radiation-induced phase development in AISI 316

Description: During irradiation at temperatures between 460 and 650/sup 0/C, the alloy AISI 316 decomposes into an austenite matrix of altered composition and some mixture of six possible precipitate phases. These phases are ..gamma..', G, eta-silicide, M/sub 23/C/sub 6/, M/sub 6/C, and Laves. The balance of phases developed is exceptionally sensitive to a large number of material and environmental variables and frequently varies within a single grain. All of these phases are found to be either naturally ri… more

Endogenous retrovirus and radiation-induced leukemia in the RMF mouse

Description: The induction of myeloid leukemia in irradiated RFM/Un mice has been associated with retrovirus infection. However, two characteristics of this strain complicate efforts to define the role of the virus. This strain possesses only one inducible host range class of endogenous virus and a unique gene, in addition to the Fv-1/sup n/ locus, which specifically restricts exogenous infection by endogenous viruses. These characteristics possibly account for absence of recombinant viruses in this strain,… more

B vs H curves for 1008 and 1020 steels

Description: For the purpose of investigating the saturation regions, we have measured the B vs H curves for the purchased 1008 and 1020 steels. In order to make a fair representation, the sample was chosen under the following conditions: (1) it was taken far away from the flame cutting region; (2) a hand saw was used to cut off the sample; and (3) finally the sample was machined into a toroidal shape of about 2'' OD, 1.75'' ID and 1/2'' height. We fabricated two samples of each type of steel in order to ch… more

Operational-Condition-Independent Criteria Dedicated to Monitoring Wind Turbine Generators: Preprint

Description: To date the existing wind turbine condition monitoring technologies and commercially available systems have not been fully accepted for improving wind turbine availability and reducing their operation and maintenance costs. One of the main reasons is that wind turbines are subject to constantly varying loads and operate at variable rotational speeds. As a consequence, the influences of turbine faults and the effects of varying load and speed are coupled together in wind turbine condition monito… more

The impact of covariance information on criticality safety calculations in the resolved resonance energy range.

Description: Resonance data play a significant role in the calculations of systems considered for criticality safety applications. K{sub eff}, the major parameter of interest in such a type of calculations, can be heavily dependent both on the quality of the resonance data as well as on the accuracy achieved in the processing of these data. If reasonable uncertainty values are available, in conjunction with their correlation in energy and among type of resonance parameters, one can exploit existing methodol… more
