High-resolution electron microscopy studies of Au--Ni spinodial alloys

Description: High-resolution electron microscopy has been utilized to monitor the decomposition process in Au--Ni spinodal alloys. Individual measurements were made of lattice fringe spacings which are sensitive to composition variations at the atomic plane level. Results indicate that rather smooth and regular composition waves are obtained at an early stage of decomposition, and that later stage coarsening results in larger amplitude fluctuations. This provides direct evidence of simultaneous decompositio… more

Lattice imaging and mechanical properties of a Cu--Ni--Cr spinodal alloy

Description: A commercially important Cu-28.9 percent Ni-2.8 percent Cr alloy has been heat-treated to produce spinodal structures. Conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and diffraction have been used to study the spinodally decomposed product and to measure the wavelengths in the specimens. Tensile tests were performed to measure mechanical properties of the aged samples, and the fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The lattice imaging technique of high-resolution … more

Study of the kinetics of the interactions of carbon monoxide and oxygen with Al-Zr surface

Description: The interaction of CO and O/sub 2/ with clean Al-Zr (40/60 atomic percent) surfaces have been studied with Auger electron spectroscopy. The initial sticking probability of O/sub 2/ on Al-Zr was measured to be S/sub 0, O/sub 2// = 0.85. The sticking probabilities of O/sub 2/ and CO as a function of CO and O/sub 2/ contamination on a Al-Zr surface have been determined. It is found, that CO adsorption is very sensitive to O/sub 2/ contamination. The CO contamination is not effective at blocking th… more

Crude oil steam distillation in steam flooding. Final report

Description: Steam distillation yields of sixteen crude oils from various parts of the United States have been determined at a saturated steam pressure of 200 psig. Study made to investigate the effect of steam pressure (200 to 500 psig) on steam distillation yields indicates that the maximum yields of a crude oil may be obtained at 200 psig. At a steam distillation correlation factor (V/sub w//V/sub oi/) of 15, the determined steam distillation yields range from 12 to 56% of initial oil volume for the sixt… more

Profiling hydrogen in materials using ion beams

Description: Over the last few years many ion beam techniques have been reported for the profiling of hydrogen in materials. Nine of these were evaluated using similar samples of hydrogen ion-implanted into silicon. When possible the samples were analyzed using two or more techniques to confirm the ion-implanted accuracy. The results of this analysis which has produced a consensus profile of H in silicon which is useful as a calibration standard are reported. The analytical techniques used have capabilities… more

The Challenge Now: Completion of the Legacy TRU Waste Mission 20 Years Early

Description: The Department of Energy's (DOE) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) opened on March 26, 1999, becoming the nation's first deep geologic repository for the permanent disposal of defense generated transuranic (TRU) waste. This waste is currently retrievably stored at 27 sites across the country. Since its opening, approximately 10,000 m3 of TRU waste have been safely characterized, transported, and disposed in the WIPP. The DOE has achieved and surpassed the original goal of sending 17 waste ship… more

Application of high rate magnetron sputtering to the fabrication of A-15 compounds

Description: High quality Nb/sub 3/Sn films have been fabricated using a recently developed magnetron sputtering process capable of deposition rates approaching 1 ..mu..m/min. at sputtering voltages less than 500 V and power levels of about 5 KW. Low sputtering voltages allow more complete thermalization at lower pressures of the material condensing on the substrate which can improve long range order. Transition temperatures of up to 18.3/sup 0/K, J/sub c/(O)'s of 15 x 10/sup 6/ A/cm/sup 2/ and Hc/sub 2/ as… more

CO adsorption on Al-Zr at room temperature

Description: A study of CO adsorption on room temperature Al-Zr has been done using Auger electron spectroscopy and gas pressure measurements. The atomic surface composition of clean Al-Zr surfaces prepared in UHV by Ar/sup +/ sputtering, was measured as a function of CO pressure and exposure time. The adsorbed C and O have the same rate constants and surface concentrations for exposures less than 2 Langmuir. Above this exposure quasi-saturation occurs. The measured sticking probability of CO on Al-Zr is co… more

A coarse-grained model for PETN crystals

Description: Using the energetic material Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN) as a specific example of molecular crystal, we describe the development of a simple coarse-graining procedure by grouping several atoms or whole functional groups into single charge-neutral beads. As compared to fully atomistic calculations the coarse-grained model speeds up simulations by more than two orders of magnitude. Yet, by adjusting only two parameters in the coarse-grained interaction, the model accurately predicts the l… more

Dislocation Dynamics Simulations of Junctions in Hexagonal Close-Packed Crystals

Description: The formation and strength of dislocations in the hexagonal closed packed material beryllium are studied through dislocation junctions and the critical stress required to break them. Dislocation dynamics calculations (using the code ParaDiS) of junction maps are compared to an analytical line tension approximation in order to validate our model. Results show that the two models agree very well. Also the critical shear stress necessary to break 30{sup o} - 30{sup o} and 30{sup o} - 90{sup o} dis… more

First-principles study of high explosive decomposition energetics

Description: The mechanism of the gas phase unimolecular decomposition of hexahydro-1,3,5,- trinitro- 1,3,5,-triazine (RDX) has been investigated using first principles gradient corrected density functional theory. Our results show that the dominant reaction channel is the N-NO* bond rupture, which has a barrier of 34.2 kcal/mol at the B- PW9 l/cc-pVDZ level and is 18.3 kcal/mol lower than that of the concerted ring fission to three methylenenitramine molecules. In addition, we have carried out a systematic… more

Nuclear Structure of Radioactive Neutron-Rich Nuclei with 4pi Detector Arrays

Description: In-beam studies of {gamma}-ray spectroscopy of radioactive neutron-rich nuclei using the 4{pi} TIGRESS array at TRIUMF requires a ''tag'' to improve the selectivity of the detected {gamma} rays in the high {gamma}-ray background produced by radioactive beams and the need for Doppler-shift correction. Multiple three-decision rules for 2/sup k/-factorial simple effects. Technical report No. 8

Description: One of the problems confronted in the investigation of environmental health and in biological research more generally is the fact that organisms often respond to combinations of treatments in ways which are not predictable from the way they respond to each of these taken separately. One air pollutant may, for example, disable the respiratory tract's self cleaning mechanisms and thereby increase its sensitivity to the effects of other pollutants. It is important that laboratory experiments be ab… more

Numerical Modeling of Impact Initiation of High Explosives

Description: We performed continuum mechanics simulations to examine the behavior of energetic materials in Ballistic Chamber Impact (BIC) experiments, using an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian code (ALE3D). Our simulations revealed that interface friction plays an important role in inducing the formation of shear bands, which result in 'hot spots' for ignition. The temperature localization during BIC impact was found to be significant in materials with high yield strength. In those materials, there are multip… more
