Sandia National Laboratories ASCOT (atmospheric studies in complex terrain) field experiment, September 1980

Description: During the period September 8 through September 25, 1980, Sandia National Laboratories, Division 4774, participated in a series of experiments held in the Geysers area of California. These experiments, aimed at providing data on nighttime drainage flow in complex terrain, were intended to provide a reliable basis for mathematical flow modeling. Tracers were released at several points on a valley rim and sampled by a large number of stations at ground level. Sandia's contribution was to make it … more

Modular airborne remote sampling and sensing system (MARSSS)

Description: Sandia is developing a modular airborne instrumentation system for the Environmental Protection Agency. This system will allow flexibility in the choice of instruments by standardizing mountings, power supplies and sampling modes. The objective is to make it possible to perform aerial surveys from chartered aircraft that have not been adapted in a more than superficial manner. It will also allow the experimenter to tailor his choice of instruments to the specific problem. Since the equipment wi… more

Absolute differential cross sections over the entire angular range for the reaction /sup 3/H(d,n)/sup 4/He at 7. 0 and 10. 0 MeV

Description: Differential cross sections for the reaction /sup 3/H(d,n)/sup 4/He have been measured at 7.00 and 10.00 MeV using the time-of-flight technique. By measuring both /sup 3/H(d,n)/sup 4/He and /sup 2/H(t,n)/sup 4/He at the same center of mass, energy-complete distributions between 0/sup 0/ and 180/sup 0/ have been obtained. The absolute scales have been established within +- 1.5 percent by using the accurate /sup 2/H(t,/sup 4/He)n cross sections at 20.0 MeV as a standard.

Retrofitting a fine-pointing system to satellite optics

Description: This paper describe a system that was added to an existing satellite-borne telescope design for the purpose of compensating the boresight errors that had been observed in earlier flights of similar instruments. Those errors had been found to be caused by thermal distortion of the spaceframe. This retrofit design was subject to severe volume restrictions because it was fitted into an already tightly-packaged instrument envelope. It was found practical to improve the basic design by converting a … more

The Los Alamos study for a next-generation spallation-neutron-source driver

Description: A study has been conducted at Los Alamos to determine the feasibility of constructing a linac/accumulator-ring configuration that provides an 790-MeV 1-M proton beam to a new target system for the LANSCE neutron-scattering research facility. The study advocates use of the LAMPF side-coupled-cavity linac with an upgraded front end as an effective means of using present facilities and to provide a path for upgrade to 5 M of beam power. The ring accumulates 1.3 {times} 10{sup 14} particles in 1.2 … more

Shielding concerns at a spallation source

Description: Neutrons produced by 800-MeV proton reactions at the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center spallation neutron source cause a variety of challenging shielding problems. We identify several characteristics distinctly different from reactor shielding and compute the dose attenuation through an infinite slab/shield composed of iron (100 cm) and borated polyethylene (15 cm). Our calculations show that (for an incident spallation spectrum characteristic of neutrons leaking from a tungsten target at 90… more

Overview of M-C Power`s MCFC power generation system

Description: The IMHEX{reg_sign} fuel cell power generation system is a skid mounted power plant which efficiently generates electricity and useful thermal energy. The primary benefits are its high electric generation efficiency (50% or greater), modular capacities (500 kW to 3 MW per unit) and minimal environmental impacts (less than 1 ppM NO{sub x}). A cost effective, modular capacity fuel cell power plant provides the industry with an attractive alternative to large central station facilities, and its ad… more

Shielding the LANSCE (Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center) 800-MeV spallation neutron source

Description: Neutrons produced by medium-energy (800-MeV) proton reactions at the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center spallation neutron source cause a variety of difficult shield problems. We describe the general shielding questions encountered at such a spallation source, and contrast spallation and reactor source shielding issues using an infinite slab-shield composed of 100 cm of iron and 15 cm of borated polyethylene. The calculations show that (for an incident spallation spectrum characteristic of ne… more

Status report on the Los Alamos National Laboratory Ion Beam Facility

Description: The Ion Beam Facility operated for 6000 machine hours last year, ranging in energy from 300 Kev to 24 Mev. Improvements include cryopumps replacing diffusion pumps, a rebuilding of the tandem chopper electronics and the vertical's corona charging system. Methane molecules were successfully accelerated by the vertical in quantities of hundreds of nanoamperes. Two replacement magnet power supplies on the tandem and a completely new capacitor shell regulator on the vertical are soon to be installe… more

Gas-Fired Distributed Energy Resource Technology Characterizations

Description: The U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is directing substantial programs in the development and encouragement of new energy technologies. Among them are renewable energy and distributed energy resource technologies. As part of its ongoing effort to document the status and potential of these technologies, DOE EERE directed the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to lead an effort to develop and publish Distributed Energy Technology Character… more

The LANSCE (Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center) target system

Description: During the summer of 1985, we replaced the WNR T-shaped target/moderator scheme with the LANSCE split-target/flux-trap-moderator design. The intent of this 'LANSCE upgrade' was to increase (to 12) the number of neutron beam lines serviced simultaneously, and to enhance the target area shielding and target system to accept 200 ..mu..A of 800-MeV protons. The four LANSCE moderators consist of three (chilled) water moderators, and a liquid hydrogen (20 K) moderator. The LANSCE target is machinable… more

A Los Alamos design study for a high-power spallation-neutron-source driver

Description: A design study for an accelerator-driven spallation-neutron source is underway at Los Alamos. The driver, based on the LAMPF facility, produces a 1-MW proton beam and is upgradable to 5 MW. After linear acceleration to full energy, an H-beam is accumulated for approximately I ms in a compressor ring and then extracted to produce an intense proton burst, less than 1 [mu]s long, onto a spallation target system with a 60-Hz cycle rate. The design uses existing infrastructure insofar as possible wh… more

LANSCE (Manuel Lujan, Jr. Neutron Scattering Center) target system performance

Description: We measured neutron beam fluxes at LANSCE using gold foil activation techniques. We did an extensive computer simulation of the as-built LANSCE Target/Moderator/Reflector/Shield geometry. We used this mockup in a Monte Carlo calculation to predict LANSCE neutronic performance for comparison with measured results. For neutron beam fluxes at 1 eV, the ratio of measured data to calculated varies from /approx/0.6-0.9. The computed 1 eV neutron leakage at the moderator surface is 3.9 /times/ 10/sup … more

RACORO Long-Term, Systematic Aircraft Observations of Boundary Layer Clouds

Description: Our knowledge of boundary layer cloud processes is insufficient to resolve pressing scientific problems. Boundary layer clouds often have liquid-water paths (LWPs) less than 100 gm{sup 2}, which are defined here as being 'thin' Clouds with Low Optical Water Depths (CLOWD). This type of cloud is common globally, and the Earth's radiative energy balance is particularly sensitive to small changes in their optical properties. However, it is difficult to retrieve accurately their cloud properties vi… more
