Charm Photoproduction Results from Fermilab E-516

Description: Results are presented from FNAL E-516 on charm photoproduction at an average energy of 103 GeV. The cross sections are given for inelastic and elastic psi photoproduction on hydrogen. Clean signals are seen for the decay D*/sup + -/ ..-->.. ..pi../sup + -/D/sup 0/, with the D/sup 0/ decaying into K/sup - +/..pi../sup + -/..pi../sup 0/. These were used to study the branching ratios for D/sup 0/ to K/sup -/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup 0/, K/sup -/rho/sup +/, K*/sup -/..pi../sup +/ and anti K*/sup 0/..… more

Results on the performance of a broad band focussing Cherenkov counter

Description: The field of ring imaging (broad band differential) Cherenkov detectors has become a very active area of interest in detector development at several high energy physics laboratories. Our group has previously reported on a method of Cherenkov ring imaging for a counter with large momentum and angular acceptance using standard photo multipliers. Recently, we have applied this technique to the design of a set of Cherenkov counters for use in a particle search experiment at Fermi National Accelerat… more

Measurement of D* Production by Pions on Nucleons at s**(1/2) = 19-GeV/c

Description: The authors report results of an experiment to measure the cross section for the reaction {pi}{sup -} + N {yields} D*{sup {+-}} X at 200 GeV/c. They observe a 2.7 standard deviation signal corresponding to a D* production cross section d{sigma}/dy = 1.0 {+-} 0.4 {mu}b at y = 0.

Report of the Intermediate-)ital p)/sub Perpendicular/ Detector Group: A Beauty Spectrometer for the SSC (Superconducting Super Collider)

Description: A ''Beauty Spectrometer'' has been designed for studies of B physics at the SSC. The ultimate goal is a definitive measurement of CP violation in the B system. The spectrometer consists of two stages and occupies one side of an intermediate-luminosity interaction region. An upstream, or intermediate, stage extends from the interaction point to 14 m and covers the angular region from 57 mrad (3.3 degree) to 350 mrad (20 degree). The forward stage extends to 77 m and to angles down to 5.7 mrad. T… more

Construction and testing of the SLD Cerenkov Ring Imaging Detector

Description: We report on the construction of the Cerenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID) for the SLD experiment at the SLAC Linear Collider and the testing of its components. We include results from testing the drift boxes, liquid radiator trays, and mirrors for the barrel CRID. We also discuss development of the support systems essential for the operation of the CRID: gas and liquid recirculator systems and monitoring. 15 refs., 9 figs.

Progress and commissioning of the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector. Revision

Description: We report the recent progress of the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector. All of the individual components of the device (TPC`s, mirrors, liquid radiator trays) have been completed and installed. Almost half of the electronics packages are installed and operational, and the data acquisition system has been commissioned. The liquid C{sub 6}F{sub 14} recirculation system is functioning. The drift gas supply systems are operating well with TMAE, and the gaseous Freon C{sub 5}F{sub 12} recirculator… more

Initial performance of the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector system

Description: All of the major subsystems for the barrel Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID) in the SLD at SLAC have now been commissioned. The CRID participated in the SLD engineering run of June--August 1991. In a cosmic ray test at the end of the run, Cherenkov rings were observed for the first time. Initial data from the CRID, including Cherenkov rings, studies of minimum ionizing particles, and data from the fiber optics calibration system are presented here.

Performance of the front end electronics and data acquisition system for the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector

Description: The front end electronics and data acquisition system for the SLD barrel Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID) are described. This electronics must provide a 1% charge division measurement with a maximum acceptable noise level of 2000 electrons (rms). Noise and system performance results are presented for the initial SLD engineering run data.
