Progress report of a research program in experimental high energy physics, January 1, 1980-December 31, 1980. [Brown Univ. , Providence, Rhode Island]

Description: An experimental program to study the interactions of hadrons and photons is being carried out with hybrid systems that include bubble chambers as visible targets as well as counter spectrometers. Experiments are being performed at the accelerators of the laboratories at Batavia, Stanford, and Geneva, Switzerland. The bubble chamber - hybrid system group is engaged in several experiments at Fermilab. Extensive analysis of the interactions of 147-GeV/c ..pi../sup +/, K/sup +/, and p in hydrogen is in progress. The results of an earlier experiment on ..pi../sup -/p interactions at the same momentum, in the same experimental set-up, are available for comparison; in this way the range of incident-channel quantum numbers studied is extended with a minimum of systematic error. This year there has been particular emphasis on associated production in interactions of the form ab ..-->.. cX, on rho/sup 0/ production, and on multiparticle correlations. Comparison of hadron production by hadrons with hadron production by leptons is being extended to all the incident particles, for a variety of kinematic variables. Two experiments with an improved hybrid system are now scheduled for data-taking at Fermilab in early 1981, to study ..pi../sup + -/K/sup +/ and p/sup + -/ interactions in hydrogen, and in aluminum, slver, and gold foils, at beam momenta of 200 and 400 GeV/c. A similar study at 250 GeV/c, using the large European Hybrid System at CERN, will begin during 1981. During the spring and summer of 1980, data-taking was begun on two experiments investigating photoproduction of charm and vector mesons, in a polarized monoenergetic backscattered laser beam of 20 GeV/c using the SLAC Hybrid Facility.

Research program in experimental high energy physics, Task B

Description: Two prototype tracking system modules of the LVD detector have been produced by the direct-mount method and tested. The direct-mount procedure was proposed by a subgroup (mainly US) of the LVD Collaboration. This method has the advantages over the previous (hood) design of greater signal-to-noise ratio, of providing spacing between the two streamer chamber layers of each tracking plane to improve track reconstruction and angular resoluation, economy and speed of production. The tests have shown very satisfactory performance, both of the mechanical aspects and of the read-out electronic which are principally Brown's responsibility. The Collaboration has agreed to proceed with production by this method. The full boot node data acquisition computer and one tower microvax, both provided by the Brown group, have been installed Hall A of Gran Sasso, where data acquisition development will proceed. FNAL Experiment E782, a study of the interactions of muons from the Tevatron, using an upgraded version of the E745 hybrid system, is now running at Fermilab. During the past year, film analysis of the 1987 run of E745, a study of the interactions of muon neutrinos, was essentially completed and a data summary tape is being produced. Also during the past year, analysis has continued both on the data of our experiments on interactions of hadrons with protons and heavier nuclei (FNAL E565, E570, E299, E154) and on the data of SLAC experiments BC72/73/75, studying the interactions in hydrogen of 20GeV/c photons.

A Muon Exposure in the Tohoku High Resolution Bubble Chamber

Description: The authors would like to propose an experiment to investigate muon induced interactions in the Tohoku freon bubble chamber, a high resolution 4{pi} detector. The Tohoku bubble chamber is located in Lab F on the neutrino beam line. The NT test beam line, which passes 4.5 meters east of the bubble chamber, has carried a muon beam to Lab F in the past. it appears possible to bend this beam to the west sufficiently to send muons of approximately 200 GeV to the present position of the Tohoku chamber. A bubble chamber experiment will have better systematics than a comparable muons cattering experiment using counters, but will have lower statistics. With the chamber, direct observation of neutral strange particle and charm particle production will make possible a unique clean study of the virtual photon interactions involved.

Multiple Correlations and High Tranverse Momentum Jets in 147-GeV/c pi- p Interactions

Description: We examine multiparticle correlations in a {pi}{sup -}p experiment at 147 GeV/c performed by the Proportional Hybrid System Consortium. The major aim of this paper is to demonstrate the existence of clusters in our data. We use different statistical algorithms to assemble into clusters the particles in each event which are associated by virtue of small relative angles. We find that these clusters are stable against different choices of metric and/or algorithm, and reproduce the effects previously observed in the data corresponding to clusters. Some of these clusters have properties similar to high p{sub T} jets. A detailed study of these jet-like clusters is described, and comparisons with some counter experiments are discussed.
