Model Study of the Outlet Structures for the Wappapello Dam

Description: This memorandum constitutes a final report of the study performed at the U. S. Waterways Experiment Station on a model of the outlet works for the Wappapello Dam The model was built undistorted to the linear scale ratio, model-to-prototype, of 1 to 25. The general purpose of the model study was to check the hydraulic characteristics of all elements in the design of the outlet works, and to develop means of correcting any uneconomic, unsafe, or undesirable conditions.

Investigation of the Design and Control of Asphalt Paving Mixtures: Volume 1

Description: "This report presents the results of laboratory and field tests conducted by the Corps of Engineers to develop a method for the design and construction control of asphalt paving mixtures. The investigation consisted of: (a) the selection of a test apparatus and the performance of laboratory studies to develop techniques and procedures; (b) the construction of a test section and the performance of traffic tests with 15,000 and 37,000-lb single and 60,000-lb dual wheel loads to obtain design criteria; and (c) additional laboratory work to adjust the test procedures to the design criteria" (p. 1).

Distribution of Soils Bordering the Mississippi River from Donaldsonville to Head of Passes

Development and Evaluation of Soil Bearing Capacity Foundations of Structures, Report 1: Field Vibratory Tests Data

Operating Forces on Miter-Type Lock Gates

Description: This report presents the results of a series of investigations to address possible lock operation problems. "Tests to determine operation forces on miter-type lock gates were conducted in a 5.5-ft-wide, 66.5-ft-long, 4.25-ft-deep flume equipped with a single set of miter gate leaves located approximately inthe center of the flume. Three linkages, with differenet kinematics of the operating machinery, were studied: modified Ohio River, Panama, and Ohio River. For each linkage, tests were conducted at gate submergences of 1 to 4 ft and at operating times of 10.1 to 40.2 sec. The effects of chamber length, bottom clearance of gates, presence of barges in the lock chamger, and nonsynchronous operation of the gate leaves also were investigated" (p. vii).
