The Scattering Constant for Doubly Charged Particles in Nuclear Emulsion

Description: "An experiment in which a nuclear emulsion stack of 25 Ilford G-5 emulsion pellicles were exposed to 925-Mev He^4 nuclei is described. The tracks of the He nuclei entering the stack were followed in the stack until they interacted or stopped. From the data the scattering constants for He^4 and He^3 were calculated."

Convergence of the Perturbation Expansion in Some Models of the Field Theory

Description: "It is shown that in a class of models of quantum field theory, the perturbation expansion of the resolvent operator, (H - z)-1, converges for all complex z. The class of models consists of all theories with Yukawa coupling in which the vacuum polarization is neglected. The method used is that of comparison with the exactly solvable neutral solar model."

Remark on the Radiative Muon Decay in the Theory With an Intermediate Vector Meson

Description: "The problem of explaining the lack of radiative muon decay in an intermediate charged vector meson theory is discussed. A possible way of introducing the charged vector meson to the theory of weak interactions is outlined in which renormalization is retained. However, if this way is used, the anomalous magnetic moment is calculated to be large, which is in contradiction with expectation."

The Nature of the Axioms of Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

Description: "The formulation of field theories by means of Wightman functions is studied. It is shown that, given two field theories that satisfy all the axioms, one can construct a family of Wightmsn fields with the same properties by a process of superposition of Wightman functions. The condition of unitarity is formulated without reference to asymptotic conditions, and it is proved that the Wightman fields constructed by the superposition process (starting with "unitary" fields) fail to preserve unitari… more

The Influence of Isotopic Composition on the Maximum in the Cosmic Ray Energy Spectra

Description: "The previously found maximum in the cosmic radiation energy spectrum is discussed, and the possibility that it arises in part from a misinterpretation of the data due to oversimplifying assumptions about the composition of the beam is examined. The importance that lack of recognition of isotopic composition may have is pointed out, and it is clear that this importance is strongly dependent on the measurements made and on the cut-off rigidity."

Hamiltonian Dynamics of Relativistic Particles

Description: "The canonical (hamiltonlan) formulation of a relativistic dynamical theory is outlined, and the existence and explicit construction of general hamiltonian theories of relativiatic interacting particles are discussed. These hamiltonian theories are shown to contain certain elements of arbitrariness which are eliminated in manifestly coveriant formulations."

Broad Range Spectrograph for Use With the Rochester 27" Cyclotron

Description: "A broad range nuclear spectrograph of the Buechner-Bainbridge type, which characteristic radius R-50 cm. has been constructed and installed for use in conjunction with the Rochester 27" variable energy cyclotron. For a given magnetic field, particles are focused over an energy range 0.63o‹E‹1.3Eo, where Eo is the energy of particles focused with orbit radius Q-R-50 cm. The resolution of the spectrograph ∆E/E is less than 0.2%. Particles may be recorded either in nuclear emulsions or in an arr… more

Contribution of Neutral Pions to Photon-Proton Scattering

Description: "The correction to photon-photon scattering processes due to the existence of the particles other than electrons is reported. The correction is of the same order in the electric charge as the lowest order term in the perturbation expansion in quantum electrodynamics, although the relevant corrections to the electron-photon and electron-electron scattering are all of higher order."

A Fast Neutron Time of Flight System for Use With Cyclotrons

Description: "Time of flight spectrometers for the study of neutrons emitted in charged particle reactions have become important in recent years, following the development of suitable photomultiplier tubes and electronic circuits for nanosecond (ns) timing measurements. The principle of operation is simple. The particles exciting the nuclear reactions in which the neutrons are produced fall on the target in bunches of the order of a nanosecond in width. the arrival of product neutrons at a organic scintil… more

A Hooded and Ion Source With a Magnetic Mirror Feature

Description: "The ion source used for hydrogen and deuterium ions in the variable energy cyclotron at the University of Rochester is of the hooded arc type. For the past year it has been operating with a new feature which has greatly improved its performance. The new feature is a magnetic mirror built into the upper end of the arc hood by a simple insertion of a steel bearing ball 1/8" in diameter. The magnetic field gradient near the ball provides a magnetic mirror action on electrons moving up the arc ch… more

The Sparker, a Divice to Overcome the Multipactor Difficulty in Starting the Oscillator of a Cycloton

Description: "Evacuated electrical oscillating cavities frequently are found to exhibit a strong loading due to electron (or iron) multiplications, the so-called multipactor effect. This effect tends to prevent the buildup of dee voltage in cyclotrons. In conventional cyclotrons driven from external oscillators having their own resonant tank circuits the difficulties are usually slight, but in cyclotrons using a simple dee system as the tank circuit difficulties are encountered in getting the oscillator t… more

Bremestrahlung in p-p-Collisions at an Energy of 150 MeV

Description: The differential cross-section for bremestrahlung in p-p collisions at an energy of 140 Mev is calculated at the upper end of the photon spectrum. the only transition which is considered is the E2 transition between 1D2 and the 1S0 state. The Siegart theorem is used and influence of the Coulomb force between the two protons is neglected.

The Quantum Mechanical Scattering Problem II: Multi-Channel Scattering

Description: "The study of the single channel scattering problem was extended to include the multi-channel case. The scattering problem was formulated in a mathematically rigorous way which reflects the time-independent point of view but is not limited by any dependence on a configuration space representation. Wave operators were defined by an integral representation. When the conditions necessary for the time-dependent formulation are valid these wave operators will be identical to those defined by the asy… more

A Multi-Channel Unit of Solid State Counters for Nuclear Spectroscopy

Description: A matrix of twenty 2 x 12 mm squared surface barrier counters has been constructed for use in the image plane of a magnetic spectrometer. The outputs of individual crystals are displayed in predetermined channels of a 100-channel pulse height analyzer. This is done by connecting separate crystals to succession sections of a delay line and converting the time difference between signals arriving at the ends of the line into pulse heights. Simple procedures for producing reliable Ge-Au surface b… more

Measurement of the Wolfenstein Parameter R at 210 Mev.

Description: "Recent theoretical advances in describing the nucleon-nucleon interaction (particularly in the T=1 state) have emphasized the importance of obtaining an unambiguous experimental determination of the scattering matrix so that the nuclear phase shifts and details of the nuclear potential may be revealed. It is possible to select five experiments, the results of which, in principle at least, determine the scattering matrix and phase shifts uniquely at one energy. Two of these experiments, the cr… more

Local Fields With Terminating Expansions (x)

Description: "The quantum theory problem of constructing explicitly a local Lorentz invariant model field theory which has an asymptotic particle interpretation and gives rise to an S matrix different from unity is discussed. It is proved that if a local covariant field H(x) has a complete current, the S matrix associated with this field is identically equal to unity. Results show that in order to get an interaction, the current is not allowed to have a terminating expansion in terms of a free field. The ab… more

Hyperon-Nucleon Scattering

Description: "The hyperon-nucleon scattering is calculated for LAMBDA laboratory energies to 315 Mev. The potentials used were those linear combinations of the nucleon-nucleon potentials as prescribed by global symmetry. The mass difference between the LAMBDA - and SIGMA -hyperon was taken into account in the kinematics. The mass differences between the SIGMA -hyperons and between the nucleons are neglected. Angular distributions and total cross sections are given for all the possible hyperon-nucleon scatte… more
