A study of steady-state steam-water counterflow in porous media

Description: Vapor-liquid counterflow in porous media arises in processes such as heat pipes, oil recovery and geothermal systems. Previous studies analysed these phenomena in separate contexts. This paper presents a unified description from which previous models result as limiting cases. The analysis includes capillarity, heat conduction, and Kelvin effects. Thermally Induced Structural Changes in Coal Combustion

Description: The effect of particle shape on char burnout is investigated in the limit of shrinking core combustion. As a first step, the particle temperature is assumed to proceed in the shrinking core regime and under conditions of negligible Stefan flow. The problem then reduces to calculating the oxygen concentration field around a non-spherical particle with the oxidation reaction taking place on the external surface. L-star pulsed coal combustor for residential space heating

Description: This quarter, substantial improvement in the coal carbon conversion was achieved. Specifically, for a scaled-down version of the residential combustor, coal carbon conversions exceeding 97 percent were realized, when utilizing methane as carrier gas for the coal. The thermodynamic properties of 2-methylaniline and trans-(R,S)- decahydroquinoline

Description: Measurements leading to the calculation of the ideal-gas thermodynamic properties for 2-methylaniline and trans-(R,S)-decahydroquinoline are reported. Description: The major benzene insoluble fraction, carboid, solvent-separated from Synthoil coal liquid, was found to be 90 wt.% soluble in pyridine. This fraction, which contains about 50% of the ash present in Synthoil coal liquid, could be 96% de-ashed by dissolution in pyridine. Description: An extensive data base was developed for six Eastern oil shales: Alabama Chattanooga, Indiana New Albany, Kentucky Sunbury, Michigan Antrim, Ohio Cleveland, and Tennessee Chattanooga shales. The data base included the hydroretorting characteristics of the six shales, as well as the retorting characteristics in the presence of synthesis gas and ionized gas. Theoretical approach for enhanced mass transfer effects in-duct flue gas desulfurization processes

Description: Bench-scale and pilot-scale experiments have been conducted to measure the mass transfer and kinetic rates at simulated duct injection conditions. Secondary atomization of single coal-water fuel droplets

Description: The evaporative behavior of single, well characterized droplets of a lignite coal-water slurry fuel (CWSF) and a carbon black in water slurry was studied as a function of heating rate and droplet composition. Oxidation of alloys targeted for advanced steam turbines

Description: Ultra supercritical (USC) power plants offer the promise of higher efficiencies and lower emissions. Current goals of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Power Systems Initiatives include coal generation at 60% efficiency, which would require steam temperatures of up to 760°C. This research examines the steamside oxidation of alloys for use in USC systems, with emphasis placed on applications in high- and intermediate-pressure turbines.
