State-of-the-Art for Assessing Earthquake Hazards in the United States, Report 28: Recommended Accelerograms for Earthquake Ground Motions

Description: Abstract: "A catalog of recommended accelerograms and response spectra is provided to accompany all representative values for Richter magnitudes at distance determined peak horizontal accelerations-velocities-durations, hard and soft sites, shallow and deep earthquakes. Accelerograms are also recommended for corresponding Modified Mercalli intensities. The accelerograms are related to the Krinitzsky-Chang-Nuttli curves for magnitude and distance, and the Krinitzsky-Chang curves for MM intensity."

Deterioration and Repair of Concrete in the Lower Monumental Navigation Lock Wall

Description: "This report discusses surface deterioration and repairs of concrete in the Lower Monumental Lock on the Snake River in Washington. It includes discussion of laboratory studies, testing, construction, and field evaluation of the original concrete and of the various cementitious coatings used for repairs" (p. i).

Mission Bay Harbor, California, Design for Wave and Surge Protection and Flood Control: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Partial abstract: A 1:100-scale (undistorted) hydraulic model, reproducing Mission Bay Harbor, approximately 3 miles of shoreline, and sufficient offshore area to permit generation of the required test waves, was used to investigate the arrangement and design of proposed structures for (a) improving hazardous entrance conditions, (b) reducing surge inside the harbor, and (c) eliminating potential flood hazards. The original proposal for harbor improvement consisted of a 2,200-ft-long offshore breakwater. The proposed structures for river flood control consisted of (a) a 1,200-ft-long weir in the middle jetty, (b) various south jetty extensions, and (c) diversion dikes on the middle jetty.

State-of-the-Art for Assessing Earthquake Hazards in the United States: Report 19, The Evidence for Reservoir-Induced Macroearthquakes

Description: Partial abstract: "The published evidence of reservoir-induced macroearthquakes is critically reviewed. The evidence is partitioned into three types: (a) evidence of a post-impoundment increase in seismicity, (b) correlation evidence that is composed of a plot of a reservoir variable and a seismicity variable and, in most cases, an auxiliary variable, time, and (c) evidence based on the slope of the magnitude-frequency relationship (b value evidence)."

Effect of Backfill Property and Airblast Variations on the External Loads Delivered to Buried Box Structures

Description: Partial abstract: "The results of analytical studies are presented in which (i) the SAP IV elastic finite-element (FE) code was used to perform modal analyses for a rectangular structure in vacuo and embedded in different backfill materials, and (2) a series of dynamic and static two-dimensional (2D), plane-strain, FE, structure-medium interaction (SMI) code calculations were performed using the HONDO code."

The Vaiont Slide: A Geotechnical Analysis Based on New Geologic Observations of the Failure Surface, Volume 1: Main Text

Description: First part of a final report describing "efforts to confirm the existence and nature of clay seams in the [Vaiont Slide] mass and to confirm the possible existence of an 'old' slide at the site. These efforts were made by (a) firsthand field observations of the geology, (b) an examination of preslide and postslide airphotographs, (c) laboratory testing of samples of failure plane materials, and (d) and examination and translation of geologic and other documents related to preslide and postslide conditions" (abstract, para. 2). The report also presents stability analyses of the Vaiont Slide.

The Vaiont Slide: A Geotechnical Analysis Based on New Geologic Observations of the Failure Surface, Volume 2: Appendicies A Through G

Description: Second part of a final report containing appendices to accompany a study describing "efforts to confirm the existence and nature of clay seams in the [Vaiont Slide] mass and to confirm the possible existence of an 'old' slide at the site. 2, Volume 1).

Vibroseismic Survey, Railroad Test Embankment, Aikman, Kansas

Description: Report regarding refraction seismic and vibratory tests conducted on a railroad test embankment near Aikman, Kansas as well as attenuation and dynamic laboratory tests. The refraction seismic tests indicated the existence of two distinct velocity zones, one for the embankment and one for the underlying limestone bedrock.

Use of Dredged Material Islands by Colonial Seabirds and Wading Birds in New Jersey

Description: This report summarizes the results of investigations of the distribution of colonial seabirds and wading birds on New Jersey dredged material islands, of vegetation distribution and succession on dredged material islands, and of the interactions of vegetation and birds on dredged material islands.
