Description: Abstract: "The investigation reported herein describes surface and subsurface horizontal and vertical control, sampling, testing, laboratory testing, and analyses performed to determine the stability of a rock fill over fat clay deposits (South Fill) bordering the Hudson River at the West Point Military Academy, West Point, New York. The South Fill area in its present configuration was found to be stable and should remain stable provided use is limited to parking, athletic fields, and recreational areas. The report contains documentation of data collected since the monitoring program began in 1961."

Analysis of a Cylindrical Shell Vibrating in a Cylindrical Fluid Region

Description: Analytical and experimental methods are presented for evaluating the vibration characteristics of cylindrical shells such as the thermal liner of the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) reactor vessel. The NASTRAN computer program is used to calculate the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and response to a harmonic loading of a thin, circular cylindrical shell situated inside a fluid-filled rigid circular cylinder. Solutions in a vacuum are verified with an exact solution method and the SAP IV computer code. Comparisons between analysis and experiment are made, and the accuracy and utility of the fluid-solid interaction package of NASTRAN is assessed.

Fluorimetric Determination of Uranium in Shales, Lignites, and Monazites After Alkali Carbonate Separation

Description: Abstract: "Comparative data are presented on separations of microgram amounts of uranium from milligram amounts of various metal ions with Na2Co3-K2CO3, Na2CO3-K2CO3-H2O2, and Na2CO3-NaClO. The Na2CO3-K2CO3 separation procedure is applied to the analysis of shales, lignites, and monazites. This method will determine as little as 0.001 percent uranium in shales and lignites and 0.01 percent uranium in monazites."

Feasibility of Digital Water-Quality Modeling Illustrated by Application at Barstow, California

Description: Abstract: A digital water-quality model of the shallow alluvial aquifer near Barstow was evaluated to determine the applicability of the model computer program to varied hydrolic problems. The evaluation was made on the basis of the data requirements of the model, the characteristics and limitations of the model computer program, the relevance of the model results, and the computer costs associated with the model. Two-well tracer-dilution tests may not be a workable means of determining the aquifer dispersivity and porosity for use in a water-quality model with a large grid interval is under consideration because of the relative insensitivity of such a model to dispersivity. The model results were relevant to the real-life head and water-quality conditions in the aquifer near Barstow and provided an excellent means of evaluating the cause and effect relations associated with ground-water pollution.

Uranium in Alkaline Rocks

Levee Underseepage Analysis for Special Foundation Conditions

Description: This report describes a research study in which techniques were developed for prediction of underseepage conditions for special cases of levee and foundation geometry. The differential equations for levee underseepage were derived and programmed in finite difference form for three special cases of boundary conditions. The developed programs allow analyses that are not restricted to the boundary conditions assumed in the conventional, closed form solution, i.e., two foundation layers of uniform thickness with horizontal boundaries.

Levee Underseepage Software: User Manual and Validation

Description: Report discussing the FORTRAN 77 computer program (LEVSEEP), developed to analyze levee underseepage on IBM PC compatible microcomputers with an 8087 math coprocessor. Fluidized-Bed Regeneration of Sulfated Dolomite from a Coal-Fired FBC Process by Reductive Decomposition

Description: A fluidized-bed, reductive decomposition process has been developed for regenerating calcium sulfate, a product of fluidized-bed combustion. The effect of process operating variables on the extent of regeneration and on the SO2 levels in the off-gas has been determined, and a process model has been proposed. A process for regenerating spent SO2 sorbents has been developed on a PDU scale. Tymochtee dolomite that had been sulfated during fluidized-bed combustion of coal is regenerated (reductive decomposition of calcium sulfate to calcium oxide and SO2) by the incomplete combustion of either methane or coal in a fluidized-bed reactor.

Calculated Burnups and Fluences for Experimental Fuel Elements Irradiated in EBR-II Runs 5-55B

Description: A procedure is described for calculation of burnups and fluences at any point in a subassembly in EBR-II runs 5-55B. The calculations are performed by the BRN program package and require data generated for any element in the highly inhomogeneous fueled experimental subassemblies is the most important application of the pointwise capability. Tables allow calculation of burnup and fluences for any element in such a subassembly.

Laboratory Studies for Separation of Solids from Synthoil Gross Product : Parts 1 and 2

Description: PART 1. A variety of surfactants and agglomerating agents have been added to coal-liquefaction product (from the SYNTHOIL process) to determine the effectiveness of these agents in decreasing the viscosity of the product or inducing agglomeration of suspended solids in the product (and consequently facilitating the removal of solids from the product). More than two dozen additives were tested; however, only two of the additives caused a small reduction in the viscosity of the coal-liquefaction product. PART 2. A variety of organic solvents have been added to coal-liquefaction product (from the SYNTHOIL process) to determine the effectiveness in promoting the precipitation of suspended solids in the product. High-temperature settling of the product in the absence of foreign solvent does not appear to be a promising mechanism for solids removal from this product. However, the promoter-solvent de-ashing scheme has been demonstrated to be a potentially attractive solids-liquid separation method, and kerosene has been found to be an effective promoter solvent for the SYNTHOIL gross product.
