Test beam results for silicon microstrip detectors with VLSI read-out

Description: A telescope consisting of three silicon microstrip detectors has been tested in a high energy positron beam at SLAC. Each detector has trips with 25 micron pitch and is read out by two 128-channel NMOS integrated circuits (''Microplex''). Results on the signal-to-noise ratio, spatial resolution, and two-track separation are given.

An alignment method for the Mark II silicon strip vertex detector using an x-ray beam

Description: A silicon strip vertex detector consisting of 36 independent detector modules is being constructed for use in the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. This paper describes a method for determining the relative alignment of the modules to a precision better than the 5 ..mu..m intrinsic resolution of the detectors. The basic procedure involves moving the vertex detector by known amounts through a fixed, collimated x-ray beam, and using the beam position reconstructed from the detected signals to determine the relative positions and orientations of the modules. Results from tests of the method on a subset of detectors are presented. 5 refs., 11 figs.

The Mark II Silicon Strip Vertex Detector and performance of a silicon detector telescope in the Mark II detector at the SLC

Description: A Silicon Strip Vertex Detector (SSVD) consisting of 36 independent silicon detector modules has been built for use in the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). We discuss the performance of the individual modules and the stability and accuracy of their placement in the mechanical support. To gain operational experience at the SLC, we have assembled and placed inside the Mark II a telescope made of three Silicon Detector Modules. We present results from the first data run of the SLC on the overall performance of the Telescope, including backgrounds, charged particle tracking and spatial resolution. 7 refs., 10 figs.

Radiation hardness and annealing tests of a custom VLSI device

Description: Several NMOS custom VLSI ( Microplex'') circuits have been irradiated with a 500 rad/hr {sup 60}Co source. With power off three of four chips tested have survived doses exceeding 1 Mrad. With power on at a 25% duty cycle, all chips tested failed at doses ranging from 10 to 130 krad. Annealing at 200{degree}C was only partially successful in restoring the chips to useful operating conditions. 10 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

A step towards a computing grid for the LHC experiments: ATLAS Data Challenge 1

Description: The ATLAS Collaboration at CERN is preparing for the data taking and analysis at the LHC that will start in 2007. Therefore, a series of Data Challenges was started in 2002 whose goals are the validation of the Computing Model, of the complete software suite, of the data model, and to ensure the correctness of the technical choices to be made. A major feature of the first Data Challenge was the preparation and the deployment of the software required for the production of large event samples as a worldwide-distributed activity. It should be noted that it was not an option to ''run everything at CERN'' even if we had wanted to; the resources were not available at CERN to carry out the production on a reasonable time-scale. The great challenge of organizing and then carrying out this large-scale production at a significant number of sites around the world had the refore to be faced. However, the benefits of this are manifold: apart from realizing the required computing resources, this exercise created worldwide momentum for ATLAS computing as a whole. This report describes in detail the main steps carried out in DC1 and what has been learned from them as a step towards a computing Grid for the LHC experiments.
