Radiation protection optimization using a knowledge based methodology

Description: This paper presents a knowledge based methodology for radiological planning and radiation protection optimization. The cost-benefit methodology described on International Commission of Radiation Protection Report No. 37 is employed within a knowledge based framework for the purpose of optimizing radiation protection and plan maintenance activities while optimizing radiation protection.[sup 1, 2] The methodology is demonstrated through an application to a heating ventilation and air conditioning… more

Hybrid expert system - neural network - Fuzzy Logic methodology for transient identification

Description: A methodology is presented that demonstrates the potential of pretrained artificial neural networks (ANN`s) as generators of membership functions for the purpose of transient identification in Nuclear Power Plants (NPP). In order to provide timely concise and task-specific information about the many aspects of the transient and to determine the state of the system based on the interpretation of potentially noisy data, a model-referenced approach is utilized, where pretrained ANNs provide the mo… more

Monitoring nuclear reactor systems using neural networks and fuzzy logic

Description: A new approach is presented that demonstrates the potential of trained artificial neural networks (ANNs) as generators of membership functions for the purpose of monitoring nuclear reactor systems. ANN`s provide a complex-to-simple mapping of reactor parameters in a process analogous to that of measurement. Through such ``virtual measurements`` the value of parameters with operational significance, e.g., control-valve-disk-position, valve-line-up or performance can be determined. In the methodo… more

Signal trend identification with fuzzy methods.

Description: A fuzzy-logic-based methodology for on-line signal trend identification is introduced. Although signal trend identification is complicated by the presence of noise, fuzzy logic can help capture important features of on-line signals and classify incoming power plant signals into increasing, decreasing and steady-state trend categories. In order to verify the methodology, a code named PROTREN is developed and tested using plant data. The results indicate that the code is capable of detecting tran… more

Expert system driven fuzzy control application to power reactors

Description: For the purpose of nonlinear control and uncertainty/imprecision handling, fuzzy controllers have recently reached acclaim and increasing commercial application. The fuzzy control algorithms often require a ``supervisory`` routine that provides necessary heuristics for interface, adaptation, mode selection and other implementation issues. Performance characteristics of an on-line fuzzy controller depend strictly on the ability of such supervisory routines to manipulate the fuzzy control algorit… more

Hypertext-based integration for nuclear plant maintenance and operations

Description: A methodology is presented that uses fuzzy graphs in the emerging paradigm of hypertext for the purpose of integrating data, information and multifaceted knowledge resources abounding in power plant operations and maintenance. A hypertext system is viewed as a set of nodes and links where with each link we associate membership functions embodying context-dependent criteria for navigating large information spaces. A general framework for navigation is outlined and graph-theory navigational tools… more
