Synthesis and Infrared Spectra of Substituted Phthalimidines

Description: A number of N-substituted-3-hydroxy-3-phenylphthal-imidines and some of the isomeric amides have been prepared in order to study changes in the infrared spectra of these compounds due to structural changes in the molecule, particularly with reference to a hydroxyl band at 3.0µ and a carbonyl band at 5.75µ.

The Preparation of Pyridinium Derivatives by the Knoevenagel Condensation

Description: An attempt is made in the work described in this paper to extend the series started by Hall and Platas by means of a Knoevenagel condensation between 3-hydroxy-1,4-naphtho-quinone-2-(4-methylpyridinium) anhydride and various aromatic aldehydes giving rise to a series of unsaturated substituents on the four position of the pyridine ring.

Preparation of Pyridinium Derivatives of 2,3-Dichloro-5(8?)-Nitro-1,4-Naphthoquinone

Description: This paper describes the preparation of pyridine derivatives of 2,3-dichloro-5(8?)-nitro-1,4-naphthoquinone. A method for the nitration of 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone is also described. Certain 4-n-alkyl, 3,4-dialkyl, and 4-cycloalkyl pyridine derivatives are caused to undergo condensation reactions with the nitrated naphthoquinone, giving rise to a series of compounds of the preceding type (X). All of the compounds prepared will be tested for anti-tubercular activity by Parke-Davis and Company.

The Syntheses of Amino Substituted Salicylic Acids and Related Compounds

Description: The introduction of the ether linkage into various compounds imparts physiological activity, hence the synthesis of various ether derivatives involving the phenol group seemed to be a possible route to tuberculostatic substances. The compounds reported in this work are to be tested for tuberculostatic properties by Parke, Davis and Company.

The Synthesis of N-(4-Nitrophenacyl)-4-Alkylpyridinium Halides and Reduction Products

Description: The synthesis of several N-(4-nitrophenacyl)-4-alkylpyridinium halides and their reduction products, 1-(4-aminophenyl)-2-[1-(4-alkylpiperidyl)]ethanols, was undertaken because of structural analogies between these and other physiologically active compounds, such as chloroamphenicol (I), 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (II), and 2,2-bis(p-aminophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane (III).

Naphth [2,3-d] Imidazoline-2,4,9-Triones

Description: The study of some acylurea derivatives of 2-amino-3-alkylamino- and -3-arylamino-1,4-naphthoquinones was undertaken to determine the course of reaction under conditions similar to those used by J. R. Hoover and A. R. Day to prepare 2-alkyl-1H-naphth[2,3-d] imidazole-4.9-diones from 2-acylamino-3-amino-1,4-naphthoquinones.

Nitration of Thiophene Analogs of DDT

Description: Since thiophene very often yields compounds that are analogous to benzene derivatives in general physiological properties, it was decided to attempt to prepare the nitro and amino derivatives of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis-(2-thienyl)-ethane (V) as well as the nitro and amino derivatives of 2,2,3-trichloro-1,1-bis-(2-thienyl)-butane (VI).

Naphthoquinone Studies

Description: This thesis describes a series of naphthoquinone reactions employing pyridine carboxylic acid derivatives (nicotinic acid derivatives). The products of these reactions will be tested by Parke, Davis and Company for their activity against the tubercle bacillus and other pathogenic microorganisms.

A Study of the Friedel-Craft Reactions of Phenolic Ethers

Description: The original purpose of this investigation was to prepare a series of diketones. However, since considerable difficulty was encountered in the preparation of these diketones, attention was shifted to a study of the Friedel-Craft reactions of phenolic ethers and to the reaction between phenolic ethers and dicarboxylic acids with boron trifluoride as a catalyst.

Some Amine Derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinone

Description: It was the aim of this investigation to prepare derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinone substituted at the 2- and 3- positions with various amino groups. 2,3-Dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone was selected as the starting material because of the possibility of replacing the chloro groups in direct substitution reactions with amines.
