Progress Relating to Civilian Applications During September, 1958

Description: A report about thermal-conductivity and electrical-resistivity measurements made on a uranium-1.5 w/o zirconium alloy surrounded by NaK enclosed in a Zircaloy-2 capsule which were in poor agreement with measurements made directly on a uranium-1.5 w/o zirconium specimen.

Progress Relating to Civilian Applications During April, 1956

Description: A report about elevated-temperature properties of dilute uranium-aluminum and uranium-zirconium alloys. Hot-hardness measurements show that small amounts of wither aluminum or zirconium increase the hardness of uranium at elevated temperatures.

Program Relating to Civilian Applications During October, 1958

Description: A report pertaining to the thermal-conductivity and electrical-resistivity measurements of uranium encapsulated in zircaloy-2 and surrounded with NaK as a heat-transfer material which is not in agreement with results obtained from unclad uranium.

Progress Relating to Civilian Applications During July, 1956

Description: A report based on a study about the factors which affect the amount of chemical reaction between water and Zircaloy 2 at high temperatures. Also, experimental programs for the measurement of radiation emissivity, chemical reaction rates, and diffusion rates have been completed.

Progress Relating to Civilian Applications During July, 1957

Description: A report about equipment which is assembled and tested to determine the feasibility of measuring the thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity of irradiated uranium rods clad with Zircaloy 2 with NaK as the heat-transfer medium.

Progress Relating to Civilian Applications During May, 1956

Description: A report about mechanical properties of dilute uranium alloys are being investigated in an effort to develop a high-strength alloy for fuel elements. Elevated temperature tensile tests were made on two dilute uranium-aluminum alloys, and several ternary alloys were arc melted.

Progress Relating to Civilian Applications During December, 1956

Description: A report about thermal conductivity measurements which are made on uranium, uranium-1.5 w/o zirconium, and zircaloy 2 for a program that aims to determine the feasibility of using clad specimens. Results from the measurements indicate that the difference in thermal conductivity values between uranium and uranium-1.5 w/o zirconium is less than the anticipated 5 percent.
