Description: A wind-tunnel investigation of horn balances on a 45 degree sweptback, semispan, horizontal tail surface was made to determine the effects of horn size and inboard-edge fairing at a Mach number of 0.30 and to determine the effects of compressibility up to a Mach number of 0.89. Presented are lift, drag, pitching-moment, and hinge-moment data and lift and hinge-moment parameters.

Investigation by the transonic-bump method of a 35 degree sweptback semispan model equipped with a flap operated by a series of servovanes located ahead of and geared to the flap

Description: Report presenting an investigation in the 7- by 10-foot tunnel to determine the feasibility of using a serovane control at high-subsonic and low-transonic speeds. The control could presumedly be deflected with relatively low control forces compared to flap-type controls. Through the range tested, the servovane control produced increments of lift, pitching moment, and rolling moment int he correct direction over most of the angle-of-attack range tested.

Effect of hinge-line position on the oscillating hinge moments and flutter characteristics of a flap-type control at transonic speeds

Description: Report presenting free-oscillation tests to determine the dynamic hinge-moment characteristics of a trailing-edge, flap-type control surface with various hinge-like positions. Oscillating amplitude was found to have a large effect on the control aerodynamic damping derivative and the damping was found to be unstable in the test Mach number range above 0.90 for the hinge positions tested. Results regarding damping moments and flutter characteristics, spring moments, and effect of hinge-line position and comparison with theory are provided.
