Preparation of Radioiron of High Specific Activity

Description: From abstract: "A comparison has been made of methods for producing Fe59 of higher specific activity than that obtainable by irradiating natural iron in the Clinton pile. Five processes have been considered, (1) irradiation of natural iron in the Hanford piles, (2) irradiation of enriched F58 in the Clinton and Hanford piles, (3) Szilard-Chalmers enrichment using ferrocyanides in the Clinton pile, (4) collection of recoils in a phase separable from the bulk of the iron, and (5) the Co59 (n,p) F… more

Homogenous Reactor Project Quarterly Progress Report For Period Ending January 31, 1955

Description: The reactor equipment cell is expected to be completed by February 15. While filled with water, the tank was inspected for leaks, and the few leaks found will have been repaired by February 15. All orders for construction materials placed prior to this quarter have been received. New requisitions issued during the quarter total $16,000. Work orders were issued, and fabrication of all low-pressure-system components was begun in the ORNL shops. The thermal shield around the reactor vessel was spe… more

Homogenous Reactor Project Quarterly Progress Report For Period Ending April 30, 1955

Description: Part I. Experimental Reactors: The effect of prompt-neutron lifetime upon reactor safety was investigated for the HRT. It was found that for a given pressure rise the allowable rate of reactivity addition was relatively insensitive to the average prompt-neutron lifetime, although the rate de creased somewhat with decreasing lifetime for the higher pressure rises. With only source neutrons present and the reactor initially subcritical, the allowable rate was practically independent of the initia… more

Homogeneous Reactor Project Quarterly Progress Report [for] Period Ending May 15, 1951

Description: Technical report outlining the reconstitution of the Homogeneous Reactor Experiment Project (HRE) as the Homogeneous Reactor Project. Report covers the need for a broader developmental program to establish the feasibility of obtaining the potential advantages of homogeneous reactors for the production of fissionable materials and power. Details the ultimate objective of the ORNL program to provide the technical information required to determine the feasibility of a full scale plutonium power pr… more

Homogeneous Reactor Project Quarterly Progress Report: November 15, 1951

Description: From summary: "Construction of the HRE facility was essentially complete on November 15, 1951 except for minor revisions and final testing. A program of engineering and nuclear tests of the system hasbeen drawn up, and the tests will be started early in the next quarter. The only major HRE items for which design is not complete are the samplers for the fuel, [gas], and reflector systems. These will be completed in time to be installed before critical experiments begin; meanwhile, temporary samp… more

Homogeneous Reactor Project Quarterly Progress Report: For Period Ending October 31, 1954

Description: Part I. Experimental Reactors: The design has been completed for all the major high-pressure and low-pressure components except the reactor pressure vessel. Contained in this report are the most recent revisions of the low-pressure-system flow sheet, a description of important details of the reactor cell, and the final design of the main heat exchangers, the inner dump tanks and separator. the recombiner and recombiner-condenser, and the outer dump tank and reflux condenser. Part II. Thorium Br… more

Homogeneous Reactor Project Quarterly Progress Report for Period Ending July 31, 1955

Description: Construction of the HRT reactor shield tank was completed, and the inside surfaces were painted. The roof structure for the tank is being assembled in preparation for an acceptance pressure test. Service piping and instrument lines are being installed in the central room area by ORNL craft forces. This work is approximately 50% complete. Fabrication of all temperature system components, except the blanket outer storage tanks, has been completed.

Calculation of levels of Radioactivity to be Expected in the Coolant of the Power Pile

Description: Estimates of the minimum and maximum levels of radioactivity which might be present in the He coolant of the power reactor were calculated for the reactor in operation at the 40,000 kw level using jacketless fuel elements. Values are approximate but they show that the presence in the He of at least 105c of activity originating from recoiled and or diffused fission products is reasonable.

Source of high activity levels recently observed from shipping containers and transfer cans

Description: Shipping cans containing product from plant runs completed in the latter half of April and in May showed, in general, definitely higher levels of radiation than had been observed previously. Likewise, containers for the transfer of the F-10-P solution from the 224 Bldg. to 231 Bldg. (during May) exhibited higher radiation levels than could be attributed to higher power levels and increased batch sizes. These higher radiation levels were indicative that some radioactive element (or elements) was… more
