Direct production of muons in the forward direction by 300-GeV protons on uranium

Description: An experiment involving direct production of muons by 300 GeV protons on uranium was undertaken in order to determine if the ..mu../..pi.. ratio of 10/sup -4/ is consistent with the idea that the muons are decay products of massive mesons. Processes such as vector meson decay and Bethe--Heitler conversions of photons contribute about 20 percent to the measured signal. The interpretation of the excess signal is not definite. (SDF)

A search for direct muon production in the forward direction

Description: We propose to search for direct muon production in the forward direction from 300 GeV protons incident on a heavy nuclear target. By using the first stage of the Ml beam as a source of a diffracted proton beam and the second and third stages of Ml as a spectrometer, one can make a measurement of the direct muon to pion ratio at values of x between 0.3 and 0.75. If this ratio is on the order of 10{sup -4}, the event rates are on the order of 800 direct muons/hr. at an x of .5. The modifications … more

Development of a 10-bit 500 Msample/sec Waveform Digitizcr

Description: The device reported is a simple, robust, low-cost device to sample fast analog signals and convert them into digital data. Goal is to utilize existingleCroy Front End developments and BNL previous efforts to: Extend the dynamic range from 8 to 9-10 bits; Extend the depth of memory; Lower the cost; and Increase availability to general research and industrial cornmunity.

A Proposal to Continue Measurements of Direct Muon Production in the Forward Direction

Description: The authors recently have measured the direct muon production in the forward direction at small p{perpendicular} and find a large direct muon to pion ratio. At x = 0.3 the ratio is {mu}{sup -}/{pi}{sup -} = 1.83 {+-} 0.43 x 10{sup -4} for negatives and {mu}{sup +}/{pi}{sup +} = 6.4 {+-} 1.3 x 10{sup -5} for positives. The direct production of {mu}{sup +} and {mu}{sup -} are equal although the {pi}{sup +}/{pi}{sup -} ratios is large. They propose to continue these measurements and extend them to… more

Measurement of the angular correlation parameters in the BETA decay of polarized. lambda. hyperons

Description: Final results are presented from an experimental investigation of the ..beta.. decay of polarized ..lambda.. hyperons with a large-aperture magnetic spectrometer. The data sample consists of 544 events. The values A/sub ..nu../ = 0.72 +- 0.12, A/sub e/ = 0.05 +- 0.12, and A/sub p/ = -0.47 +- 0.12 are obtained for the three spin asymmetry parameters, and A/sub e..nu../ = 0.07 +- 0.12 for the electron-neutrino correlation. The lepton-plane correlation with the ..lambda.. spin, D = 0.11 +- 0.20, i… more

Atomic number dependence of hadron production at large transverse momentum in 300 GeV proton--nucleus collisions

Description: In an experiment at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory we have compared the production of large transverse momentum hadrons from targets of W, Ti, and Be bombarded by 300 GeV protons. The hadron yields were measured at 90{sup o} in the proton-nucleon c.m. system with a magnetic spectrometer equipped with 2 Cerenkov counters and a hadron calorimeter. The production cross-sections have a dependence on the atomic number A that grows with P{sub perpendicular}, eventually leveling off proport… more
