Technical evaluation of a USSC Integrated/Direct Mount PV Roofing Module system at NREL

Description: The results of a 16 month technical evaluation performed on a nominal 1 kW{sub ac} utility-interconnect amorphous silicon PV system deployed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory`s PV outdoor test site are given here. The system employs 64 prototype United Solar Systems Corp. Integrated/Direct Mount PV Roofing Modules mounted on simulated attic/roof structures. In this paper we show that the PV array fill factor has been relatively stable with respect to time and that the seasonal variati… more

Technical evaluation of Solar Cells, Inc., CdTe modules and array at NREL

Description: The Engineering and Technology Validation Team at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) conducts in-situ technical evaluations of polycrystalline thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules and arrays. This paper focuses on the technical evaluation of Solar Cells, Inc., (SCI) cadmium telluride (CdTe) module and array performance by attempting to correlate individual module and array performance. This is done by examining the performance and stability of the modules and array over a period of … more

Technical evaluation of a dual-junction same-band-gap amorphous silicon photovoltaic system at NREL

Description: On December 7, 1992, a 1.8-kW{sub ac} utility-interconnect photovoltaic (PV) system using amorphous silicon modules was brought on-line at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory`s photovoltaic test site. This system was deployed to conduct an in-situ technical evaluation of the PV array (in a high voltage configuration) and system performance and reliability in a utility-interconnect application. The system is unique due to the installation of construction-grade insulation on the back of each… more

Automatic detection of alternations in pulmonary venous pressure

Description: Image processing and pattern recognition techniques are useful in radiology to aid in the decision making process involving disease patterns in radiographs. The long range goal of this study is to develop a completely automated computer controlled optical system for early detection and classification of prepulmonary edema. This is achieved from chest x-rays by observing and measuring certain patterns of lung vascularity which enable us to characterize the presence and severity of the disease. T… more

Polycrystalline thin-film module and system performance

Description: The Module and System Performance and Engineering Project at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) conducts in-situ technical evaluations of photovoltaic (PV) modules and systems (arrays). These evaluations on module/array performance and stability are conducted at the NREL Photovoltaic Outdoor Test Facility (OTF) in Golden, CO. The modules and arrays are located at 39.7{degree}N latitude, 105.2{degree}W longitude, and at 1,782 meters elevation. Currently, two polycrystalline thin-fil… more

Technical evaluation of two 6-kW mono-Si photovoltaic systems at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Description: This paper presents an analysis of performance data on the two 6-kW{sub ac} grid-connected photovoltaic systems at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The performance parameters analyzed include dc and ac power, aperture efficiency, energy, capacity factor and performance index which are compared to plane-of-array irradiance, ambient temperature, and back-of-module temperature as a function of time, either daily or monthly. Power ratings of the systems were also obtained for data c… more

Siemens solar CIS photovoltaic module and system performance at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Description: This paper evaluates the individual module and array performance of Siemens Solar Industries` copper indium diselenide (CIS) polycrystalline thin-film technology. This is accomplished by studying module and array performance over time. Preliminary temperature coefficients for maximum power, maximum-power voltage, maximum-power current, open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and fill factor are determined at both the module and array level. These coefficients are used to correct module/arr… more

Percolation-Continuum Model of Evaporative Drying: Homogeneous or Patchy Saturation?

Description: Porous rock on the earth's surface often contains more than one fluid phase, and an important case is partial saturation with air and water. We implemented a pore-scale, percolation model coupled with a continuum model for water vapor diffusion in order to create a simulated tomographic image of water distribution within a rock core during drying. As drying proceeds, the initial, continuous water cluster breaks up into smaller and smaller clusters with an increasing surface-area-to-volume ratio… more

Overview of photonics research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Description: Much of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory`s (LLNL) expertise in photonics was acquired in the execution of the Nuclear Testing mission. As LLNL refocuses its resources into areas that have dual benefit for the nation, their photonics program is beginning to apply these unique capabilities to key national issues involving high-speed communications, while retaining the expertise to apply the technology to defense missions. Much of the exciting work being done at LLNL will have applications i… more
